Ben Whishaw, ultra brit
Cannes: Meeting with the actor of “The Lobster”.
By Johanna Luyssen Photo Frédéric Stucin 18 May 2015
The meeting took place at 17 o'clock, he ordered a peppermint tea. He drinks it in English style (yes, sometimes clichés are true), calmly and with elegance, in the middle of the shoots, interviews and cloud of press attachés and other assistants who gravitate on this overcrowded terrace. Ben Whishaw is in Cannes to defend the dystopian satire The Lobster, and he remembers the shooting, as bizarre as the film, in the depths of Ireland: “We were isolated in this hotel in the middle of nowhere, in this countryside so sorry and so beautiful … which helped to reinforce this sense of desperation that we perceive in the film.”
He is sensitive to atmospheres, this slightly pale romantic boy, this English middle class born thirty-five years ago in Bedfordshire. His Englishness is perceived even in his film choices: he played the romantic poet, the sickly John Keats in the superb Bright Star by Jane Campion; but also Q in a James Bond film, Skyfall; and more recently [he was] the voice of the bear Paddington in the patriotic animated representation.
After this satirical, half-British comedy The Lobster, he will throw himself into another project from England: he will interpret the role of Freddie Mercury in an upcoming biopic. He, the melancholy fan of the Cocteau Twins and of Nick Cave, of PJ Harvey and of Portishead, who had played the role of Rimbaud in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There; he, intellectual actor who avidly reads Seamus Heaney and TS Eliot, in short this fragile and delicate boy, former shy child who drinks mint tea to preserve his throat, becomes suddenly enthusiastic for the vocalist of Queen. “Freddie Mercury is a super-human figure, almost a god; deep down, it is difficult to understand that he is dead. However, I will try my best to do him justice.”
This mastered emphasis, this quiet strength, he had also developed into a form of peaceful activism. Ben Whishaw has since the summer of 2012 joined in a civil union with his partner, Australian Mark Bradshaw. And he had made his coming out of the simplest of ways: a statement. “It was never a secret. And, at the same time, I know that it is important. But I also reckon that labels are not interesting.” So let us add that he is neither a fierce activist, nor a beautiful kid indifferent to LGBT activism. Here is in short what Ben Whishaw has revealed to us, using different tones and phrases, with lots of gentleness - and, truly, a perfect BBC accent.
OH MY GOSH I'M DYING
So I went onto the French news site liberation.fr to get a current event article for my French class. I browsed the news stories for a while, trying to find one that really interested me (especially since 7000% of the news stories were about the Olympics which I like but all those articles were a mile long and I am so not translating that this late).
When suddenly, a wild David Bowie appeared!
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE.
Intrigued, I clicked on the story and scrolled down a bit further.
and then it happened
