How to Post your First Chapter on AO3

So, you’ve written the first chapter of your new fic (congratulations!) and you rush to AO3 and post it. BUT, did you mark it as a multi-chaptered fic or did you leave it categorized as a 1/1?

When you post a multi-chaptered fic make sure you select “the work has multiple chapters” even if you’re only posting one of them right now.

When fic readers see 1/1 on any AO3 fic, they assume it’s a oneshot, something short, something to read in one sitting.

When they get to the end and realize it’s actually just the first chapter in a series they can feel tricked and turned off from commenting or subscribing for more chapters.

Also, people looking for a new long fic will know that this is the one for them to pay attention to!

Hopefully, this tip will help you avoid losing readers and help you capture the attention of the readers most apt to love your new fic. 🥰
