Weight of Love quilt - Finished!
It took over 4 years, but I finally finished the Weight of Love quilt that I started with Libs Elliott back when I first moved to Ottawa.
It was my one project that for whatever reason, just never seemed to get done! I left it less than half-pieced for about 3 years (I didn’t touch it after our workshop). At a retreat in 2018, I finished up the patchwork section, but then I waited about another year before appliquéing it on to a backing fabric. Then I finally quilted it up this past November!
Quilty Details:
* Libs Elliott’s “Weight of Love” quilt pattern - started in a workshop with her back in 2015
* Approximately 65″ square finished
* Used a combination of Kona cotton and Cotton and Steel Basics
* Patchwork section is pieced with Y-seams
* Appliqued the pieced section on top of solid fabric; I didn’t cut out the back so it’s extra thick under the patchwork
* Straight-line quilted on my domestic with 1/2″ spacing, using Wonderfil 40-wt thread
* Backing and binding in Cotton and Steel basics
I’m so glad to have this long-time work in progress done! Do you have any projects like this that just take years?
“Embrace the Chaos” baby quilt: I finished up the baby quilt that I started at a workshop in April with Libs Elliott, hosted by the Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild! I’m really happy with it. The softer low-volume palette was different for me, but I think it still worked in this modern style baby quilt.
Quilty details:
* 30″ x 30″ square finished size
* Used several fabrics in soft colours, including Kona cottons, Lecien First of Infinity, Libs Elliott, and Cotton and Steel
* “Collage” fabric on back
* Faced binding to finish up with a clean edge
I’m not sure where this one will end up yet - for now, I have it hanging on the wall in my sewing room, and I’m kind of liking having it there!
Linking this one up with Finish it up Friday!
Block One of my current Build A Quilt project
Top is from Alison Glass Handiwork fabrics (for my mini me)
Bottom is a Libs Elliott line (my matching quilt as requested by my mini me)
Pattern is an Angela Walters exclusive.
Do you have a wild side? We do! Libs Elliott’s Wild Side collection for Andover fabrics, that is! Find it in store in our quilting department! We can’t wait to see your finished projects with it!
Love Patchwork and Quilting, Issue 41: I am so happy to share that I have a pattern in the latest issue of Love Patchwork and Quilting, released today! I was so surprised and excited to see that my project was actually featured on the cover - what an honour!
This “Neon Flash” wallet has a foundation paper pieced front, and pockets inside for cards and bank notes. It also has a zippered pocket for change on the back! I used Libs Elliott’s True Love fabric for this project - which is so fun and graphic.
I’ll share more of the samples I made while testing this project over the next few days! (You can find the magazine on newsstands in the UK now, or in North America in about a month... or online anytime!)
Libs Elliott - Weight of Love workshop: Last weekend I was lucky enough to go to a workshop with Libs Elliott, organized by the Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild. I’ve followed Libs’ work for a long time, and I love her super modern, random-computer-generated quilt designs. It’s also awesome that she is a Torontonian, it’s always nice to have some Canadian representation in the modern quilting world!
Her “Weight of Love” quilt is a pattern that she only teaches in classes, and is not for sale. (She does have some pretty awesome patterns in her online shop, though). The Weight of Love features hexagons, half-hexagons and equilateral triangles.
Since I’d been totally focusing on the things I’m trying to finish for Quiltcon submissions (the Michael Miller challenge and the scrappy improv quilt), I didn’t have time to think too much about fabric for this quilt before the workshop. I decided on this palette of super bright, bold colours the night before, and just grabbed a bunch of fabric from my stash!
The challenge of this quilt is the Y-seams - the seams where three hexagons meet. I’d never done Y-seams before. Libs helped out and showed how to do them (those are her tattooed hands, not mine :) ). Y-seams were definitely less scary and less complicated than I thought it would be. My seams aren’t perfect, but that’s okay - I’m sure I’ll get better as I finish this quilt. I’m glad to have a new way to sew together hexagons, since they’re one of my favourite shapes!
Thanks to Libs for coming to Ottawa, it was a great workshop and lecture! And thanks to the Ottawa MQG for organizing.
