I have made your giant mug! And I Rumbelled it. I know, shocking...
This mug is made from a cone ten porcelain (same stuff grandma’s fine china is made of). The surface design is a royal blue underglaze. I first carved the lines into the mug, filled them with the underglaze, then brushed on the leaves. The final glaze is a clear glaze and since it’s a bit of an odd batch, is VERY clear, unlike it’s usual icy blue (which was the intent) which would have matched this project. That means that this is one of very few pieces using this glaze and surface design that will actually be white.
Porcelain is special for several reasons, but the most fun reason is it’s transparency. When you receive this, hold it up to a bright light source and look right through it! This doesn’t happen with stoneware.
Is that cool or what? Can you believe this was once a pile of mud? I love porcelain because it is magical, by which I mean I feel awe when I behold it’s amazing properties.
I loved making this for you. It made me happy and I am pleased that this came out like this with only one try. That’s not a guarantee with pottery. Anyway, totally dishwasher and microwave save. Porcelain is tougher than stoneware, still to be treated with care, but won’t chip as easily. Don’t expose it to open flame, but it’s otherwise much tougher than you might think. And still... I don’t want to send this through the mail because it might not survive the postal service throwing the box around. But I will get this to you eventually.
Big hugs, my friend. I miss your face. But making this for you was a little like spending time with you because I got to think of you the whole time!
