the music truck

Whenever my kids hear the annoying, off-key organ-grinder sound of an ice cream truck driving past, they might observe out loud, “Oh, there goes the music truck.” Because Mommy and Daddy are horrible liars who don’t want their kids to know what the true purpose of that truck is, because we don’t want to have to argue over expensive frozen desserts at the most inopportune times.

When I was younger my mom always told me, "Don't worry the main character won't die. No author would do that." ... So why is it that now I am surprised if a main character survives a book or movie without dying or at least getting some life ending PTSD.
