the key to maintaining discipline
There are 2 important tools for any kind of person, ordinary or otherwise, to succeed at something: discipline and perseverance. Attempting a challenging task without either of those attitudes is a loss because the full practical extent of the individual's or group's capability towards that task is not utilized.
Unfortunately, discipline is boring. Immensely boring. And that is indeed one of the reasons why so many people, myself included, find it difficult to maintain it for any task, especially long-term.
The key to maintaining discipline is to make and keep it interesting. There are various ways you can do that, and honestly it is specific to you. When you are executing self-control, you are putting pressure on your brain. You are suppressing it's natural reward circuits and substituting a more "rewarding" task (like social media) for a "less" rewarding task (like studying). That is why discipline is 'boring'. There doesn't feel to be any output of maintaining it in the short term.
So keep it exciting. You could keep short goals of discipline everyday (even better with a like minded friend - maybe even a small monthly competition kind of thing). You could use a Pomodoro based app (like Engross). You could go for a walk or take a break after a focussed interval of work or study (basically giving yourself small rewards). These are some very common ways. You could figure out some other unorthodox way for yourself too: basically whatever works for you.
Just make sure you keep it interesting, and you will reface boring old discipline into one of your most powerful tools of success.
Confidence
Confidence is not something you are born with, it’s not something that you either have or don’t. Anyone can feel confident and at ease, it’s a mindset.
I have a very simple question for you:
Why would you not be confident?
Why not?
Think about it for a second...
what’s the reason really? the reason why you don’t speak your mind when you want to, the reason why you don’t go to that event even though you would love to?
-
There is no good reason for you to not enjoy your life fully, and be proud of who you are.
The only way to reach that new mindset is simply by trying, right now, and later too, and then, it will feel natural.
You won’t become a different person. You will simply allow yourself to be more you. And feel good about yourself.
-
I was a very shy person for a long time, and am still struggling with self-confidence from time to time, especially in unknown situations, or when I need to talk in front of a group.
Last week, I was in one of these situations, and I told myself : Ok, let’s do this just like I would if I was feeling confident.
The first few seconds felt like acting, and so strange.
I spoke my mind in the group, I threw in ideas even though I was not 100% they were good. I spoke loud and clear. I laughed at myself without wanting to disappear when someone disagreed with me. I acted confident and then..., it felt right, it felt like me.
Even more like me than ever before.
And the best part is: people reacted pretty well to my confident self. I had nothing to worry about.
In fact, if someone makes you feel bad for feeling good, THEY are the problem. Leave them behind and continue to grow.
Let your BE inform your DO.
