Idealization
Things seem to take hold of us. Their beings pop up to us and say, "Pick me, pick me! Concern yourself with me!".
Should we forego of all things? Of course not. Concerning yourself with things is essential. It's a fundamental source of happiness.
The idea is to choose what you wanna concern yourself with. Resist the pull of being when it doesn’t serve you.
The recommended study break is 5 minutes. But it need not be this way. 10 minutes might let your mind cool down better.
Should I do all calculus exercises? Only if it's important to you to do so. I prefer to maximize leisure and minimize work. The goal is to pass the exam and to learn how much I wanna learn.
Are difficult things more worth it? Lots of people will imply so. Consider if you want to let yourself follow with that.
Are you wasting your potential? If potential means capability of being good at things I'm not interested in, I might as well throw it in the trash. However, if potential means the potential to find my own happiness, then yep, this is a problem.
I call those ideas without personal significance that seem to intrude on you "idealizations". Most of the time I find myself preferring to avoid them. Sometimes I'm fine with the subject but the hype surrounding makes me hnghhh. Ideology, political affiliation, academical ability, mastery, hard work, tradition, old-school, status, contributing to society, doing things "right", Vim, Emacs.
Ok, I use Vim and like Emacs, but I find the culture surrounding them bullshit.
