A special thanks to the wonderful @renmackree for tagging me!
This one's shorter, but I'm gradually getting back to lifeguard!derek. I have not forgotten about this one!

The kid’s friends rushed past him into the room. Sympathetic words fell out of their mouths. Questions spilled out amongst reassurances. The closed door muffled their anxious voices from the hallway. Derek stood next to the doctor. His eyes wandered to the door, the small window giving him a narrow view of the room.
“Is he okay?”
“He’ll be just fine,” she replied calmly. “The recovery might not be pretty, but he gets to keep his leg. We call it a hit and run bite. The shark saw movement and thought it was food. They usually bite once and go.”
Derek nodded solemnly. He knew what a hit and run shark attack was. Living in a tropical climate meant he had to if he wanted to save people. His boss trained the lifeguards how to deal with bites every six months as a precaution. Shark attacks in Hawaii were rare. There were less than ten a year and he was never one that had to deal with them.
The doctor smiled. “I take it you’re the lifeguard. You did a great job. The tourniquet was a good idea.”
He gazed at the floor. “Thanks.”
“He’ll be fine. You can visit for a short time if you’d like, but he’s very overwhelmed and should rest.”
He nodded again. “It’s better he spend time with friends. I should get back anyway. You never know what’s in those waters.”
