{русский ниже: замужем за иностранцем} Being married to a foreigner is always an ongoing discovery. For sure, there are some cultural and traditional differences - those are the basics of “marrying a foreigner 101” *unofficial course. Everyone talks and knows about those. I think there are enough hashtags #lifein{insert the country} nowadays to learn all you need to know about cultures and traditions of the country one is “marrying into” to become a pro within a couple hours’ span. But there are deeper differences , differences that are not really talked about, differences in mentality. Mentality that formed through decades and centuries, evolving as society evolves and shaping views and understandings of men and women of different cultures throughout the world. Those also are the roots of many “hard walls” international marriages run into, unless... you look at things from the other side. I now lived more in the US than I lived anywhere else in the world. While not the land of my birth, the USA is just as much of a motherland to me as the country all of my family still lives in. Over the past 20 years it shaped me into a person I am today. While learning the “how-to”s of American culture and executing them perfectly ( per my friends and family’s opinion) took just a year or two, it took 10+ years to start to UNDERSTAND the core of mentality here. Particularly, the mentality of women. Especially, women-feminists. Feminism has a... not such a chic ring to it in Eastern European culture. Growing up, we didn’t really know what feminism was. To many, up to this day ( as I see it constantly from comments Eastern Europeans and citizens of surrounding countries leave on my IG feed), feminism is encompassed into a definition of a “stupid women who don’t want men opening their doors or pulling their chairs up to the table”. They cannot understand WHY anyone would complain about being a woman and talk about some “women’s rights” Because, for about the last 100 years, Eastern European women worked along the lines with men, having the ability and opportunity to do everything men do. IF they wanted to. They worked together. They 👇🏻👇🏻 (at Santa Monica, California)
