I don't know if you can help me but I'll ask anyway. I have facial hair ('stache u kno) and I'm tired of bleaching it I want it off my face. I have three options: threading, depilatory cream and waxing. What would you recommend? I ain't about the hairy life anymore. Thanks, love your blog btw :)
Hmmmmmm.
Kennedy here. Wow - you read my mind. I was writing a post about my own experiences with body hair removal and I stopped writing because I didn’t have the emotional capacity to explain how I dealt with the feminist guilt I had to resolve before spending money on getting hairs yanked out of my body on the semi-regular. I’m not a gazillionaire and I’m not getting that shit maintained as often as I like because I’m not the heroine from an early 2000′s romantic comedy.
I have this weird disconnect between my politics and my lived experience right now which explains my rapid series of decisions lately and my lack of presence on this blog. Hi readers, I’m not going to Grad School anymore. I’m going to college to learn hard skills for the media biz *peace sign emoji*.
Totally derailed your ask. Three options you say? Here’s a mix of anecdotal evidence for all three and some beauty industry knowledge I’ve tried to dredge up.
Before we proceed: facial hair tends to be softer and finer in relation to other hair on the body. Keep that in mind.
Threading - My Mother gets this done to her brows and occasional upper lip stuff and she says that it hurts a lot! So if you’re okay with pain, this is fine because it’ll remove the hair at the root in a precise manner. Assuming you would be getting this done in a salon - it’s not a DIY procedure if you don’t already know how to do so.
The Cream - Painless. Full of ingredients that would give Gwyneth Paltrow a seizure. I think that “Natural Beauty Products” are elitist though so use if you’re cool with putting this stuff on your skin. My friend Nikita said that she tried the cream solution and that it made her skin raw and her hair grow in course.
Waxing - I’m so wary of pharmacy wax kits. They seem like repurposed Kotex pads that went through too much glue in a test run. Not ouch proof, because you’ll be much gentler with the tug than someone else would be. This would even be hard to do with a friend or a partner because they would be much gentler than an aesthetician would be. Waxing can also rip your skin off, which tends to look much more dire on your face.
Hope this helped!
