Robespierre sent thousands to the guillotine before meeting the same fate himself in 1794. A facial reconstruction has been created from his death mask, supposedly made by Madame Tussaud from his decapitated head.

The photographs of the reconstruction in this article show the profile shape of the nose.

Compared to the physionotrace which we know was traced from life…

That is not Robespierre’s very distinctive nose. It’s shorter, straighter, doesn’t have the same shape at the top or the pert and perky upturn. For the same reason as we can say about the pastel used by Scurr and Martin: the subject of the mask is not him.

2 interesting possibilities:

1. Tussaud chose a sitter for the mask who vaguely resembled some of the engravings available to her in England, to suit her market which expected a villain. See interesting article here.

2. It is one of the Revolutionary era portraits, evidently a life-mask, but of someone else and has been misldentified.

Sadly, there does not appear to be a ‘Reply’ function on the article.
