The freshest unfurling foliage of Fagus sylvatica (Green Beech). Probably the last tree species to make it into the UK when the land bridge between us and continental Europe was lost a little over 10,000 years ago. This is the defining quality, which determines whether a plant is native, non-native or naturalised in the UK. Not as shocking as Running with scissors but a truly amazing 'story'. A few years ago I wanted to create a film-going group called 'BBC' Bugger the book club (tongue-in-cheek for lazy readers) but this book makes me want to start one!!
