I resonate with a lot of what you share, particularly the emotional/over eating struggle! Refined foods (bread, pancakes, icecream etc.) are an addiction for me bc I can eat SO much of them & not feel satiated, thus it feeds the emotional eating, especially when combined with Netflix lol! Going cold turkey this year (eating 95% whole foods) AND only eating while present has helped, but I also feel like avoiding refined foods isn't a long term solution for balance u feel? what has helped u? x
Hi love! I think so many people can relate & ultimately those foods are addicting in general so don’t feel alone. For me, I’ve found that getting back into exercising more has really helped with regulating my eating & keeping on track with eating more holistically; instead of thinking how I’d love a packet of chips, I think about how my body really needs protein to recover from my workout & promote muscle growth (aka work towards my fitness/body goals) which motivates me to eat better.
Whole foods are definitely healthier & more satiating than processed foods, but I agree that having a balance & eating processed food here & there isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What I found works & would recommend is focusing on eating as holistically as possible, but, not restrict yourself & really listen to your body.
I’ve come to learn that ‘cravings’ for foods, processed or not, are often signals from your body that it needs more of a certain macro or micro nutrient, so if you’re craving processed foods have a real think about what you’re body is really telling you. For example, when I crave packet chips I’m really just in need of some easily digestible carbs and/or sodium, so instead I’ll have something like sushi or a sushi bowl (veggies, rice, tamari, avocado) which is packed with nutrients OR when it’s around that time of the month I often crave oily/fried things & really that’s just my body asking for more fat to regulate my hormones so I just load up on avocado, seeds etc & get a far more nutritious meal. I also struggled tremendously with feel satiated, even when eating holistically, but found that by consciously increasing my protein + fat & reducing my carbohydrates to have a more even nutrient breakdown it’s almost completely subsided that issue.
Ultimately the message is to just be attentive to what you’re body is really asking for & don’t be afraid to experiment with your nutrient breakdown (e.g. eating more/less protein/fat/carbs, increasing iron intake etc)
In terms of what & when to eat processed foods I try to keep it to a social thing or only during really intense cravings. I find if I let myself go too long without having something I often crave then I’ll end up just binging out like crazy on it one day so I find it better to just have smaller quantities more often & when you feel in control as opposed to waiting until you can’t take it anymore if that makes sense. On top of that, a lot of it just comes with time. As we start living more presently, change friendship groups, have different living/work circumstances, all these things help shift our focus from food or whatever internal battles we are facing & with time can really help us overcome them so have faith & be strong!
Hope this has helped xxxxx love sim
