The US Coast Guard annually publishes the List of Lights, featuring information on navigational aids maintained by the Coast Guard. Such lists offer more complete and detailed information than what can generally be shown on a chart. For example, the Olympic Tower (formerly the Northwestern Mutual Insurance Building) in downtown Seattle, boasted an illuminated spire, listed as a beacon for coastal navigation until the spire’s removal in 1971 due to maintenance issues.
