“Vernon!” Alicia squeals when he makes eye contact. “Why are you still waiting here?”
“I was supposed to walk home with you, after ballet class.”
Alicia shakes her head. “I don’t think Mom meant you had to every day. I can walk three blocks by myself.”
“But Mom said we were ‘sposed to stick together.” She’d said it just last night, after watching the news. There’d been a story on kids disappearing.
“It’s not always safe,” Mom had said, kissing the top of Vernon’s head. She’d turned back to finishing Alicia’s hair, talking about how they needed to look out for each other.
