Luke 6:31 (KJV) - And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
Cult Bound as Gomez and Morticia
Raven was Gomez and Sam was Morticia
Tim and Danny, who had recently become online friends, didn’t know what to expect when Tim‘s friend Raven walked in on Danny’s video call with him introducing Tucker and Sam to Tim.
They are expected, maybe Raven to leave quietly, or maybe she would join them for a few minutes or even ask Sam about her make up
They weren’t expecting to see Sam and Raven start morbidly, flirting, or for the call and with Raven opening up a portal to buy killer plants from poison ivy to give to Sam.
None of the three boys understood what was going on.
Raven and Sam, however, were just glad that their lover had followed them into this new world.
Now, they could stop pretending to be so normal.
(neither of them were very good at pretending to be normal.)
When revolutionary women clash, argue, or even engage in physical confrontations with high-ranking members of the Convention, it becomes a dramatic moment in history.
Warning, this is not entirely a serious post, so if you're looking for historical accuracy, this is not the place
Charlotte Robespierre is said to have physically held back Couthon so that Maurice Gaillard could escape, according to Gaillard's account, which was later recounted by Lenôtre as you can see here https://www.tumblr.com/anotherhumaninthisworld/747746530277146624/i-found-the-charlotte?source=share in the great post written by @anotherhumaninthisworld
Marie Françoise Hébert allegedly called Collot d'Herbois an "actor" during a session at the Cordeliers Club, according to Georges Avenel.
"What! Submit ourselves to Jacobin censorship like guilty people seeking absolution? This is what we do not want!" And Collot appears, and suddenly, alongside the shouts, there are whistles and applause. "We will never come to an agreement!" —"Nor embrace!" —"Let’s read the minutes of the 14th!" —"No!" —"Yes!" "They preach insurrection there... We cannot make a pact with rebels..." "Let’s read it..." Meanwhile, Collot speaks. He speaks on behalf of Marat, "our model for all of us," he exclaims. "Bravo! He is on the field!" But Collot, who had not completely forgotten his theme from the previous day, stammers: "Do not listen to personal hatred because two individuals have suffered..." "That’s false!" some shout. "It’s not about individuals, but about principles!" others shout. "Bravo!" people cheer from the galleries. "Come on, Collot is nothing but an actor," said Madame Hébert, sitting next to her husband. "He is here to pull off a theatrical stunt!" And Sister Goupille was right. Collot speaks, and the theatrical stunt is carried out. For half an hour, an hour, he harangued. "I was misled by the false reports of journalists!" he said, and he implored so much, with such tears, that the Muscadins had to fall silent, that President Momoro also started crying, that the emotion spread from the desk to the hall, and suddenly there was a huge cheer... All the hands, all the hats, all the bonnets were in the air: they swore to be united forever, the Cordeliers and the Jacobins.
I’m not sure personally whether Marie-Françoise Hébert was insulting Collot d'Herbois at the Cordeliers Club or if it was something else. Furthermore, Georges Avenel is sometimes unreliable and echoes the clichés of the French Revolution’s black legend, although some passages in his biography are accurate. Nevertheless, this passage remains amusing.
According to Louis de Launay and Sylvie Audouin, at the age of 17, she reportedly had a violent argument with Carnot and Prieur de la Côte d'Or over the arrest and execution of the Hébertists (a faction to which she and her husband belonged, as Xavier Audouin was a close friend of Hébert). The first source is Louis de Launay, who relied on a statement from Eugène Eschassériaux, the great-grandson of Monge. “On May 9, 1794, a month after the execution of Danton and Camille Desmoulins, and the day after Lavoisier's execution, Mrs. Ardouin, daughter of Pache, was present, probably with her father [Biography of Eschassériaux]. Her husband had been the General Secretary of the Ministry of War under Pache. She held, like her whole family, very advanced views. That evening, in Monge's salon, she had a very heated argument with Carnot, Prieur de la Côte-d'Or, and other members of the Committees of Public Safety and General Security: those whom Pache called the ‘Septemvirs.’ Guyton de Morveau also attended the meeting. Mrs. Ardouin wanted to justify Hébert and his accomplices, whose arrest had occurred during the night of March 13-14, with their execution on March 22.”
According to sources reported by Aulard, Xavier Audouin claimed that Sylvie had quarreled with one of the members of the Committee of Public Safety (though the true reason for the arrest of the Audouins and Pache was entirely different as you can see here https://www.tumblr.com/nesiacha/778721992245477376/jean-nicolas-pache-the-swiss-minister-of-war?source=share ). We don’t know if other sources confirm this dispute, but it’s still noteworthy.
Marie-Anne Babeuf had a violent quarrel with Guffroy, her husband’s printer (whom Babeuf and Guffroy would later have a political break with). Indeed, Marie-Anne Babeuf, with her son Emile, was busy folding her husband's newspaper. "My wife and my son, aged 9, both as devoted and republican as their fathers and husbands, are committed to assisting me by all means. They make the same sacrifices. They are busy day and night at Guffroy, my printer’s, folding, distributing, and shipping the newspaper. The house is abandoned." After this, everyone knew there would be a break with Guffroy, as Gracchus would accuse him of stealing. Later, he wrote in the 27th issue of his newspaper, "Guffroy is shamelessly stealing from me. He collects all the fruit of my labor. My first issues were printed in two editions, he sold a lot, received all the revenue, received all the subscriptions, and I never saw a penny." In a postscript confirming the break between Guffroy and Babeuf, Guffroy mentions Marie-Anne Babeuf: "The previous issues are our joint property. However, your wife (Marie-Anne) took some despite my wish. Everything will belong to you if you pay me for the printing." Babeuf would later write, "Guffroy, my printer, stopped the printing of number 26 yesterday, he also stopped its sale, seized about thirty thousand copies of all my issues, kicked my wife and son out, and announced (to them) that he would denounce me to the Committee of General Security."
With all this in mind, one can only imagine that when Marie-Anne Babeuf stood up to Guffroy over the newspaper issues, the quarrel must have escalated violently, leading Guffroy to behave in such a way.
If you're wondering whether Marie-Anne saw Guffroy again after this dispute, the answer is yes. Gracchus followed his wife’s advice when he was imprisoned again and devised a clever ruse. He began to correspond with adversaries like Fréron and Tallien, re-established contact with Guffroy , and sent a friendly letter to Fouché. The goal was simple: to make them believe he was either completely naïve or willing to submit. This ruse aimed to get him released as quickly as possible through this deception. Here is the link to find the excerpt from the letter he sent to his friend Thibeaudau. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the letter from his wife encouraging this trick, but in this letter to Thibeaudau ( as you can see here https://www.tumblr.com/nesiacha/776947165190897666/the-cunning-side-of-gracchus-babeuf-to-deceive-his?source=share ), Gracchus asked her to reconnect with Guffroy to gauge his reaction as we can see here: "In my letter to Guffroy, after which I sent my wife to him, a letter that will be almost copied in drafts (which I will submit to you beforehand) for Fréron, Tallien, Isabeau, in this letter, I say, not only do I play the humble role of a petitioner, but I disguise myself to the point of pretending to be an apostate, and I torture my imagination to provide, in perhaps a novel way, specious arguments to justify the current political system. You’ll see this, and no doubt you’ll laugh privately. But here is what I wonder: will these people be kind enough to want to be my dupes? Have I not shown too austere a virtue for them to believe it corruptible? The reception of my wife by Rougiff * confirms my unfavorable conjectures, although there is a valid reason that Rougiff is too personally occupied to think of others."
One can only imagine Marie-Anne’s manipulation against Guffroy, knowing what he had done to them some time before. I don’t know whether I find it amusing or impressive that Marie-Anne stands up to Guffroy to the point that it escalates like this, and then the fact that she temporarily returns to him to better deceive or manipulate him.
Honestly, if you have any examples of disputes or clashes between revolutionary women and deputies from the Convention, regardless of political camp, during the Revolution, don’t hesitate to share them, even though nothing quite matches the moment when Charlotte Robespierre physically held back Couthon ( no matter I love Couthon).
*Rougiff is Guffroy
