There's something so incredibly fun about Babs constantly in Dinah's ear asking "what's happening? what's going on? please explain in detail" while Dinah is actively being murdered in early BoP

I think it's a good way of showing that:

1) Babs doesn't know everything, and that she genuinely needs Dinah to be cooperative in order to help

2) that Babs sucks at not being in control. She hates not being in the field, she hates that she doesn't know everything. And she will be the most annoying asshole abt it until she everything is transcribed to her

The 1996 BoP oneshots show this a lot. Like, Oracle being super controlling (and condescending) enough to annoy Dinah into cutting comms is the main conflict of most of them.

And it always ends with Dinah learning to be less reckless and to take a second opinion. While, Babs needs to realise that she needs to trust Dinah to work with her on the field, and that just because Dinah isn't her does not mean she's dumb or incapable on her own.

Basically, they learn to trust each other.

As an older queer, allow me to say: the walls of the closet are load-bearing. It is our job as a community to stand in front of that door and tell everyone who wants to peek inside to fuck off.

There are so many reasons a person may choose not to come out and there is no reason a person would owe the public or a stranger that information. Certainly it's not owed simply because someone is famous.

what cheeses me most about Yanessa’s (attempted) last-minute insertion of the Light into Hal’s play is her excuse that it’s necessary to prevent the tragedy about a failed rebellion against Azgra from just being a tragedy. Bitch (magnificent), the tragedy is subverted by the fact that they’re putting on the play, as a triumphant and prosperous people 70 years after killing Azgra! The rebels will die, Azgra will give a gloating speech, maybe an ancestral Lloy will bow to him while glancing directly at the fourth wall, and then the actors will all get up and take their bows! You think Halandil Fang would open his much-sought-after theater with a simple tragedy about a failed rebellion against the god whose conceptual corpse he is treading upon these boards? Halandil Fang, brother of a legendary rebel, lover of a Lloy druid of the Old Path? (Yanessa doesn’t, of course; it’s just an excuse.) I’d even bet the play Kother’ai pre-dates the Shapers War in some form—Azgra seems like the sort of guy who’d enjoy forcing his slaves to perform pantomimes of his victories against them—and Hal rewrote it, or at least used it as a recognizable template. Because orcs make art, now, their own art! That’s the triumph from the tragedy!

The important thing about wool is that it continues to keep you warm even when it’s soaking wet.

Other natural fibers don’t do this. In fact, quite the opposite. Campers and boaters are usually familiar with the phrase, “cotton kills.” If you’re wet in cotton or linen, your clothes actually sap heat from your body.

If you sink in a lake in late October like I did today, staying warm is important. I was rescued long before I would’ve actually died, but cold makes your muscles seize up, which isn’t good if you have to swim to land.

Which brings me around to life jackets. If the water’s cold enough, you may only have five-ten minutes until your muscles seize (today I probably had 40-60, more than enough time to get to land if I hadn’t been picked up), and you’ll drown.

In a life jacket, even in extremely cold water, you can float semi-conscious for perhaps another 30 minutes or so before you actually freeze to death, which is usually when someone rescues you.

What’s more, you probably know that moving around on land warms you up. Jumping jacks, jogging in place, etc.

In water, moving actually makes you colder. You need to stay still curled up in a ball, which you can only do in a life jacket.

In wool AND life jacket, you’re warm, and your head’s above water, which is pretty much your only and entire goal.

If you’re allergic to wool, synthetics are available specifically for this purpose. I know I always say natural fibers are the way to go, but when it comes to safety, wear what protects you!

Yep! A really simple “experiment” I learned as a kid and now use in my own courses is sticking your hand in ice water. Compare moving it around in the water to curling it up in a fist. The contrast is stark!

To increase your survival time in on cold water, you want to curl up! If you’re with others, you want to huddle!

Again, both are only possible when wearing a life jacket!

Philly Cops Are Reportedly Monitoring Anti-AI Memes, According to Internal Alert

A bulletin from a regional fusion center clocks increasing anti-AI sentiment on social media and warns offline destructive action is coming.

The Constitution and centuries of case law have done an adequate job of enshrining the right to protest in America. But according to the Trump administration, those rights are all but forfeit if the target of a protester’s ire is an AI data center. By their logic, publicly expressing a desire to have a water-hogging, environment-polluting, perpetually buzzing superstructure built in the middle of one’s community is tantamount to strapping on a suicide vest.

As such, the administration—which has gone all-in on America’s AI future and has seen the President personally enriched for it—is trying to brand opponents to that future as terrorists. Nearly half of Americans have negative views of AI, and 7 in 10 don’t want data centers built in their communities. Nonetheless, a trench of reports by the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and fusion centers recently obtained by WIRED indicate the administration is actively targeting such individuals, whom they’ve labeled “anti-tech extremists.” The chilling news comes in the wake of the National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, released last September, which attempted to paint other fuzzy yet Constitutionally protected charges—like being anti-American and anti-capitalist—as designators of domestic terrorism.

A confidential law enforcement bulletin recently obtained by The Intercept reveals that, at least in Philadelphia, cops are taking note of those speaking out against AI. In a December report from the Delaware Valley Intelligence Center, marked “for official use only,” its authors warned that “domestic violent extremists (DVEs) are likely interested in targeting artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.”

The report, offering little evidence of tangible threats to data center property or the smattering of humans behind and within them, even acknowledges “a lack of specific information on plans to target AI data centers in the Philadelphia area.” Instead, the report points to vibes to monger its fear. Highlighting Facebook memes saying things like “I bring a sort of ‘tannerite and gasoline’ vibe to ai data centers,” and a reference to the “Butlerian jihad” that has transcended the pages of Dune and become a real-world anti-AI meme, the report accurately clocks mounting frustrations with our AI overlords.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

I've been getting penis enlargement scams and pyramid schemes that don't even bother to pretend to be otherwise on YouTube – it's like every platform is now running the kinds of ads that even three years ago would have been restricted to porn sites, and I'm not gonna lie, the fact that everyone seems to be getting desperate all at once ain't an encouraging sign!
