guys i’ve always hated lila but something just hit me, specifically when she says “you were right abt the difference between us. i too want to live like you do- without a leash around my neck” in s02e08. i always hated her bc she was working with bpo, and to me, she had no redeeming qualities (other than the fact that i found her so intimidating to the point of finding her iconic). but this statement from her made me realise: her only options were to work with bpo or be turned into a bolger. that’s not a free choice so i think i should have more compassion and understanding for her? idk

Ok here's another one for you: how do you think Lila's cluster ended up being collaborators for BPO? Were they given the electrocution treatment from Whispers and converted by force, or did they pick sides based on what they believed was most advantageous?

ohhh you got me right in what keeps me awake at night: Lila's cluster.

So the short answer is I actually don't know. I truly, honest to God, don't know how Lila's cluster became collaborators.

I have analyzed this series in depth. I have written timelines and lots of words on what happens with our main 8 during the entirety of the series. I've tried to write wikis for this show.

And yet.

I cannot explain Lila's cluster and their collaboration with BPO with any textual evidence because our series got cut short and perhaps we would have gotten a better explanation about collaborators then, so all I can do is speculate. What follows is almost 800 words of speculation that I hope someone smarter than me tries to continue in the reblogs.

Lila and her cluster of collaborators

So, in S02E04 Lila says Fuchs is like “any Sapien, a temporary solution to a long-term problem.” Wolfgang correctly guesses BPO and that they’re not hunting Lila’s cluster because she’s made some kind of deal. Then Wolfgang asks how it works and Lila says “same as everything else in the world: figure out what you want and you figure out how far you’re willing to go to get it”

Wolfgang: and what do you want?

Lila: everything.

What I get from this interaction —and Lila’s later admission that she wants to build a Rione, “a city for our kind”— is that once Lila was reborn a sensate, she only had one mission: to make the most out of it.

However, her emphasis in “a city for our kind” has always made me think that Lila, like many other sensates, was afraid. The difference was that Lila was willing to go far to protect herself –and by extension, her cluster. And she means to protect her cluster fiercely, the same way she protects herself. Let us not forget “we’re mai soli. Never alone.”

We know that the entirety of Lila’s cluster has survived up until that point in the story (we know this from the fight in the restaurant, where all 8 of Lila’s cluster fight with her just like our beloved cluster fights together), but we don’t know if any of them —if Lila— has been tortured before.

It’s not wrong to assume that perhaps when Lila was reborn a sensate, she and her cluster were warned by their Mother/Father about BPO. We might even speculate that their Mother/Father met a similar fate to Angelica and killed themselves to help Lila’s cluster escape and keep them safe.

We know that Lila was a “gun for hire” (according to Sutra and Puck), so this means Lila had connections in the criminal world that could have let her find out what happened to her Cluster Mother/Father, and this could also be how she ends up running into Whispers. We know that Whispers hunts through his connections, so it’s not crazy to say that perhaps Whispers encountered Lila when she was digging for info on BPO. We also know that Lila is connected to Whispers, so Whispers and Lila clearly met face to face at some point before in the story.

Whether that was on good terms or not, we will never know.

But we do know this: Lila leaves with her brain intact and so does her cluster.

This could be because she was tortured and coerced into it (to be honest this seems like the most likely alternative) or Lila was smart enough to figure out Whispers was high enough in the food chain that she could ask something of him (my favorite theory). What does she ask of Whispers? To meet with his boss obviously. We KNOW that Lila was in direct contact with the Chairman (last episode. The Chairman knows Lila wants a Rione and tells her she can have her Rione once Whispers is under custody again), but we don’t know the extent of the negotiations between them.

I like to think that Lila was like “Ok, so you want to control sensates? I will give you sensates. But you will leave my cluster and me alone, and you will give us a safe place to live at.”

But as y’all probably know from real life, it’s not like someone can promise someone else a piece of land without there being consequences to that promise. Where are you going to get a piece of land —and not any piece of land, Lila wanted fucking Napoli— to give to these people. Any type of “promised land” is a lie. We know that if the Chairman had given Lila Napoli that it would be unenforceable because that’s not how life works. Because Lila didn’t want just protection. She wanted a “safe place to be themselves, away from Sapiens.” Lila wanted a city that she and her cluster could control, but most importantly, a city SHE could reign over.

So yeah, I’m a big fan of the Lila-is-scared-but-will-do-anything-to-live theory. Whether that means she faced the torture herself or one of her cluster did remains to be seen, but I know that Lila wanted power and she would have done anything (she did pretty much anything) to have it. Not that it worked for her in the long term. Lila and most of her cluster end up dead at the hands of our beloved August 8th cluster and we never get to know the entirety of their motivations because fucking Netflix execs thought cancelling this show was a good idea.
