St. Aidan's Old Church, Magilligan da dr_urbanus (Martin) Tramite Flickr: The medieval church ruin adjacent to the more modern St. Aidan's Catholic Church, in the parish of Magilligan, Co. Derry. The medieval church was built on the site of an earlier church founded by St. Colmcille in the 6th century. An ancient holy well at the site indicates that this was a pre-Christian spiritual site. Following the Reformation, the church was renovated in 1660 and used by the local Church of Ireland community until 1773 when they moved to their present church nearby. During the post-Reformation period, the graveyard was used by both the Catholic and Church of Ireland communities, while Catholics worshipped at a Mass Rock on the lower slopes of Binevenagh Mountain. After the relaxation of the Penal Laws, the church was returned to the Catholic Church by Bishop Hervey, the Earl Bishop of Derry (who built the Bishop’s House and Mussenden Temple at Downhill). The Catholic community worshiped here until 1826, when they moved to the modern St. Aidan's. Buried in the graveyard of St. Aidan’s is Donncha Ó hÁmhsaigh (1695 - 1807), known in English as Denis Hempson or Denis O’Hampsey, the renowned blind harper from Magilligan and known as last of the bards. He is buried alongside his daughter and his wife, who he married at the age of 86 - he would live to 112.
