Hi! Soooo, I have a really hard time writing about characters at work unless I really understand how that profession works and what a typical day in the life is. (I once had an idea for a story about lawyers but I had to scrap it because I realized I had no idea how to accurately write about a lawyer's work life). Do you have any ideas for jobs that characters could have that would be easy to research and write about? Also, do you have any advice for writing about more complex jobs and ways to not need to research as much/be such a perfectionist when writing about work? Thank you so much!
for 'easy to write about' job's I could recommend something such as retail related work or waitressing--you don't have to research too much as it's a fairly popular job and you don't need to dig deep to learn more about it. Influencer career is something I'd recommend too, as platforms such as YouTube or Tik Tok rarely share the 'secrets' with their own influencers so most people just wing it.
When it comes to complex jobs and research--I'd choose something that is often portrayed in the media (movies, tv shows, games) as you have a lot of things to base your own portrayal. Then again, it's important to remember things function differently depending on a country or state--healthcare providers or psychiatrists will work differently in Europe and in US, similar to waitressing, bartending etc.
I'd recommend choosing a free-lance type of work--it doesn't require too much research, allows you some liberties and you can bend the truth a little bit when you need it!
