Final Cup
Yay! We made it to the end! For our final lesson we revisited the original mug we sketched to face it in battle once again. Looking for redemption, armed with pencils and erasers at the ready, we applied every ninja drawing skill Old Willy had bestowed to us, to rise victorious, master artists! We would regain our pride, dignity and honour. And to be honest, yes... this mug looks a lot better, guys. Right? I think so.

Sketch of a Mug
So this is the start of something beautiful (so why is it so bad!). I’d just about finished my tea when I started sketching this mug. At first it seemed straightforward enough, and then I started to notice all of the wobbly reflections spilling down it’s glass fired surface. So that was a whole thing. Well, onwards and upwards!

Sketch of a Mug
Okay! Exercise 01: Will Kemp asks you to draw this mug at the beginning so you can see how much you’ve improved at the end. At first I thought it would be easy to draw this mug as I saw it as a relatively simple shape, but after spending 15 minutes on it I realised I had ~ no idea ~ how to incorporate details like shading, pattern (there were hearts on the mug) and adding contrast. In conclusion, I felt like a right mug!

Upside-down Line Drawing
Turning recognisable forms into abstract shapes. This exercise aims to help train your eye to see things the way an artist should. Apparently when we draw, at some point in the process we see things not as they are, but as we believe them to be. We rely on recall memory to finish our lines for us, instead of concentrating on what is truly in front of us; staying present. In this way, learning to draw is kinda like meditation.

Still Life
The icing on the cake! What a journey. I found the still life that the lovely Kempy prepared for the session had some interesting shapes and shadows which were quite satisfying to draw. Again it was nice not to worry about the details and just focus on the techniques learned throughout the classes. I think the scale of my drawing is pretty good but I definitely could’ve done with a darker pencil / stronger eraser to emphasise the lighting and different tones. Also, the shadows are looking a bit wonky! Hindsight, yeah, it’s great.

Tonal Study
I got a bit carried away with this one. My room is so cramped at the moment, and my desk is never tidy. I initially wanted to solely focus on the bottle in the centre on the composition, but everything else around it was so intrusive that I gave up and just let it all bleed into the picture plane. Basically got “photo-bombed” by my own mess!
