Excerpt: The Princess, the Knight, and the Beast

He doesn’t know if she can hear him, part of him hopes she can’t. It will make baring his soul much easier.

“Che’lu, I don’t know what to do.” He is sitting behind Zelda, feeding her the last of the ice chips. The cold of them keeps the dissociation at bay, grounding him in the now as he whispers into the empty room. “I love you, more than anything I love you, and I love the village as much as I tried not to and I lo-…I feel…” his voice drops.

He’s accepted his interest in the Zora prince—the beast was fascinating from every angle and Link has already learned so much from him—but this? This feeling in his gut couldn’t just be interest, or even just attraction (at this point he had to accept his attraction to Sidon). Interest and attraction he could overcome, he could live with putting himself second, that was the first thing he’d learned how to do in his military training. He’s been doing it his entire life, and he would do anything to save his sister.

But this feeling is different. This feeling is stronger and Link knows that the words he uses to describe it aren’t accurate at all. It bubbles in his heart and spreads warmth across his entire body—he feels exhilarated and terrified and fearful and joyful at the way it twists riptides in his belly. It is a feeling so strong it threatens to throw away the years he spent in service of the crown. It wants to rise into a wave in his body and drown out the duty and responsibility that has given him purpose for so, so long.

And at the same time he wishes, oh, how he wishes that his world had never been lit up by Sidon’s blinding smile, wishes he had never felt the heat of his honey-gold eyes boring into his very soul, never known the taste of him, the feel of his touch, the whisper of his musical voice in his ear, he wishes he could forget, forget, forget, wishes he’d never embarked on this fool’s errand.

But…

No.

That’s not exactly true, is it?

Zelda taught him that he could love, and the village taught him how. It was not foolish of him to have opened the doors of his heart so willingly, for what would his life be without it? Well, he knew what that life was, it was the one solely bound to duty, the life whose purpose was to be the tool of the crown. Duty was all he had known for so many, many years.

But now? Now he has her, he has a family, he knows what it is to love and to be love in an infinite multitude of ways and oh, what a gift it is, what a curse it will become for he knows that he must be the one that starves the fire of his heart of the very oxygen it needs to survive.

Who doesn't love it when your fish boyfriend-now-husband walks into your wedding in a dress. link wouldn't complain probably. I drew this in like 20 minutes and didn't want to go any farther so here you go

I finished it guys! I tried to record me painting it but my camera shut off 33 minutes in so I didn't get the full process. Im actually pretty upset since it only had to go another 15 minutes or so to get the whole thing.
