I was thinking about Lin (like one is oft to do), and it led me to this fun childhood headcanon.
To compensate for the fact their granddaughters would be the first Beifongs in decades to be raised away from Gaoling, Toph agreed to send her daughters to spend a month a year with their grandparents. Since Lao and Poppy knew Toph wasn't concerned in the slightest in keeping with a proper education for young ladies of the house of the winged boar, they made it their mission to ensure they were provided with the best instruction in manners and ladylike skills while they were in Gaoling under their tutelage.
As part of their curriculum to become proper ladies and one that actually took (because Poppy had to accept defeat in her effort to reign the girls' enthusiasm in physical pursuits like sparring wirh the household guards), Lin and Suyin learned to play musical instruments. While Lin favored the guqin*, Su ended up with the suona** because her first choice, drums, was unavailable. Grandpa Lao was adamant that percussion was "unbecoming of a noble lady of Beifong," but Su, like the little shit she was, proceeded to make her lessons hell on Earth for anyone with ears playing as strident and off key as humanly possible, making Lao regret his decision many times over.
Despite Su's antics, they both became good enough for Lao and Poppy's to organize recitals with the girls for their guests. Once Lin learned to play, she was inspired by a metalbending giqao player from a traveling opera troupe who used his bending to play and Lin took it as a challenge to become more proficient and to master her control.
Bonus Linvira headcanon:
Once Lin and Kuvira's relationship was made public, and after Lin retired (well, sort of because she would still accept cases as a part time Private Detective) they would occasionally host dinnera for their closest friends and family. Sometimes on Kuvira's insistence (because she loved coming up any justification to get Lin to play and despite Lin's repeteated reticence, Kuvira would win her over with a healthy dose of persuasion), they would end up putting on a little show featuring Lin playing while Kuvira displayed her proficiency in the metal wire dancing arts, which coincidentally was the persuasion that would win Lin over every time to play. 🤭

Sad Angst
Not the biggest Linvira shipper but I’ve read some absolutely adorable fics for them. So hear me out for the angst. I feel like with Lin being older and with her self sacrificing attitude everyone would expect her to be the one to die first… but what if she didn’t ? Kuvira is young, and blinded by ambition. Imagine her falling into a relationship with Lin while trying to redeem herself. Going on dangerous missions across the EK to try to make things right after the end of her house arrest… and one mission goes south. Leaving Lin alone…again.
~The Language of Love~
Prompt: Love Language
The soft rapping of rain against the window woke Lin from her rather peaceful sleep. As she turned to embrace the warmth of a body that should have been there, her eyes caught the clock on the wall while her arm met emptiness. It was far later in the day than her usual 6am rise, the darkened rain clouds having led her internal clock astray, which explained the absence in her bed. A soft, disappointed sigh escaped her lips as she rolled over and sat up into a stretch. Kuvira would already be at work and with the rain, Lin had little desire to run any errands. Probably for the best she thought, for last night they had decided to neglect chores in favour of expressing their love in more physical ways. A smile tugged at the corners of Lin’s lips as she recalled the evening’s events, making every bit of today’s cleanup worth it; though her brows furrowed in disappointment that Kuvira had not woken her before leaving. Slipping a white tank top over her head and tying the strings on her pants, Lin glanced at the photo of her retirement from RC Police Force. She had little doubt that Mako would do a good job of keeping the Force strong and unified; especially with Kuvira at his side. Lin walked into the living room on her way to the kitchen to grab some coffee before starting the cleanup effort.
What greeted Lin was a much different image than she expected. The clothing they had discarded in haste last night now lay in a basket destined for the laundry. The clean clothes previously occupying the basket were now folded on the edge of the sofa, uniforms and dress shirts ironed and hanging from a hook on the door. Couch blankets were also neatly folded and placed along the back while the pillows had been straightened up.
As Lin made her way to the kitchen, she passed the washroom and peeked her head in, curious to see if Kuvira had addressed the mess they’d made here. Sure enough, she had. The towels were hung to dry. The mirror no longer had a steamy handprint on it and the shower curtain they had pulled the edges loose of, had been replaced.
Moving on to the kitchen, Lin was greeted with another surprise sight. At the table was today’s newspaper neatly folded, the vase with an array of colourful flowers placed back at the center with the tablecloth evenly covering the wooden table. This wasn’t how they had left it previously, flowers pushed aside, tablecloth balled up in Kuvira’s hands as Lin leaned into her lover’s embrace.
At the far end of the kitchen on the counter rested a cup next to the coffee, accompanied by a note being held down by it. Lin’s green eyes scanned over the note written in a the most beautiful cursive; something only a skilled and attentive hand could muster. She takes as much care with her writing as she does with pleasuring her partners, Lin thought to herself.
My Stubborn Ox,
I dare not wake you from your blissful slumber.
I apologize for not being there when you wake,
but I hope you have a relaxing day all the same.
I’ve gone ahead and done a few chores before work
so the place isn’t such a disaster.
Love Your Metal Rose
A warmth engulfed Lin’s heart as she looked up from the note. Kuvira may not be here, but love was there, in all the little details. Everywhere she looked were little ‘I love yous.’ From the clothes that had been ironed, hung or folded in the way she preferred, to the dishes that now laid clean and drying in the rack. They accentuated her current lonely presence while embracing her in the promise of love’s return home. The thoughtfulness spoke to Lin’s heart in ways words never could and Kuvira knew this. To be at the forefront of her lover’s thoughts as Kuvira was in hers, made Lin’s heart fill with joy and longing. She made a slight scoffing sound through a smile as she folded her arms across her chest. Once the coffee was ready Lin filled her Chief Baefong mug, a standing joke with the RC Force, and took a seat at the table; flipping open the newspaper. “I love you too, my Metal Rose.” She said, as she took a sip of her coffee and began to read the news.
Meanwhile, as the rain softly connected with the windows of the RC Police Force, Kuvira sat at her desk for lunch amidst piles of paperwork. Nearby Bolin could be heard defending his new employment to Mako, claiming this time he had found his calling. Here we go again Kuvira thought, as the two brothers drew closer and she opened up her lunch. Inside was the array of crackers and cheese she had prepared along with some cut fruit. However, it appeared something else had been tucked inside the lunch bag. Kuvira reached in and produced two tickets to a theatre dance she had her eye on. Bolin leaned over her shoulder with Mako a few steps behind.
“Oooh, what’s that?” Bolin inquired while Mako brought the palm of his hand to his face.
“That’s love Bolin. True love.” Kuvira replied with a smile.
A little late on my update, but I've finally begun writing my OTP Linvira story. If anyone wants to check it out, you can find it here on A03.
We can all use some comfort in these troubling times, and these ships can always use some new material, so here's what we are going to do: send me a ship and a request for a headcanon. AUs and crossovers are welcome. I'm no good with modern AU's, so I can try to take a stab at it, but I can't guarantee satisfactory results.
I'd love to receive requests for
Korvira
Kuvirasami
Korvirasami
Korra x Nergüi (my OC)
Linvira
Makovira
Huaneska
but if there's another ship you'd like to submit a request, send it, and I'll check it out and try to come up with something.
Since I've already shared some Kuvira headcanons, now it's time for Republic City's resident hero Lin Beifong, so here are some miscellaneous headcanons of our favorite Chief Crankypants (affective).
While she was in her teens and already in a relationship with Tenzin, Lin came to terms with the fact that she had been harboring a crush on Izumi. She had originally dismissed her feelings as admiration since Izumi was the older girl of the group. Lin admired Izumi discreetly, finding her to be stylish, elegant, and cool, but as Lin got older, she realized that what she had been feeling was attraction, and thanks to the Air Nomad influence cortesy of Aang, she wasn't troubled or ashamed of being attracted to another girl. Since she was in love with Tenzin, she decided not tell anything to anyone, but what Lin didn't know is that Kya had noticed but decided not to tease her until she had come to terms with what she felt on her own. Not only that, Izumi herself had also noticed (she had caught Lin gawking at her while they've been all vacationing in Ember Island) and found it cute and flattering, especially since she knew Lin was on her way to becoming a gorgeous young woman. Luckily for Lin, Izumi was used to having admirers, something that came along with being Fire Nation royalty, according to her dad Firelord Zuko, who at his age still kept plenty of them.
Speaking of Fire Lord Zuko, weeks after Lin was left with scars from the incident with Suyin, Zuko was told what happened by Katara since she had been the lead healer to take care of her. After a conversation with Toph, during one of his official visits to Republic City, he requested to have Lin assigned to his security detail. What Lin didn't know is that this was the pretext Zuko used so he could have an opportunity to talk to Lin and allow her the opportunity to open up about what she was feeling with someone who like her, also carried the scars of a unfortunate incident with a family member on his face, and he wanted to provide her with the support he wished he’d had back then. After Toph left the reins of the department to Lin, she made sure to keep contact with Zuko, and they've remained good friends to this day.
This last one is a bonus Linvira headcanon for the rarepair fans like @redcatmusings 😉
Lin has had this deep green dress that makes her look and feel more of a knockout that she already is for the longest time, but between work and lack of opportunities, she has worn it only a handful of times. Back when they began their very discreet relationship while they were still sorting out their unique situation, Kuvira noticed the emerald dress, surprised that Lin kept such fashionable clothes tucked away between her uniforms in the closet, because she couldn't remember the last time she had seen Lin in something else other than her police uniform or her beloved tank tops. Curiosity got the best of her, so Kuvira asked why she hadn't worn it, to which Lin replied that she was waiting for the right occasion and the right company to go along with it. Months after this conversation, when their relationship was no longer the best kept secret in the city, Lin decided to attend Asami's gala for the first time as a guest and not as part of her police duties. When Kuvira rushed home to get ready to the gala, her jaw dropped with the vision of Lin in the figure hugging dress that was tailor-made for her. That evening, Kuvira had the distinction of being the only person who had both helped Lin fit into it and had also taken it off her🤭
