Scottish-born American geologist David Dale Owen conducted the first geological surveys of Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and other parts of the Upper Midwest. He was appointed as a U.S. geologist in 1839 and led federal surveys of the Upper Midwest intermittently from 1839 to 1851. His Report of a Geological Survey of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota; and Incidentally of a Portion of Nebraska Territory, published in Philadelphia by Lippincott, Grambo & Co. in 1852, greatly increased the general knowledge and understanding of the structural geology, paleontology, natural history, and mineral wealth of the Midwestern states. The report includes 27 steel-engraved plates and 21 maps and geological charts.
Although Owen led the expeditions, he was joined on the survey and in the writing of the reports by fellow geologists Joseph Granville Norwood, Charles W. Whittlesey, B. F. Shumard, paleontologist Joseph Leidy, botanist C. C. Parry, and naturalist Henty Pratten. Interestingly, David Dale Owen was the son of the Welsh utopian socialist Robert Owen who helped establish the utopian community of New Harmony, Indiana. David Dale Owen himself made New Harmony the headquarters of the U.S. Geological Survey until 1856, where he also amassed an extensive personal collection of natural history specimens, as well as a geological laboratory and museum.

We all have different ideas about 'why we ride' adventure bikes. For some, it's the challenge of making it through an ordeal, feeling the freedom you can go anywhere, getting away from it all, just connecting with nature, or maybe all of the above... What's your top reason?
