Lip froze in his place, his whole body unable to move just what it took to finish the step he was halfway through as she spoke up. Why would Rory even ask that? Especially when he’d just told her he was leaving. Possibly for good. Especially when whatever it was they had had, once, was never actually something, without having ever been nothing. Mark gathered himself, forcing his leg to finish the step he was taking away from her before turning around to see her face. Did he love Rory? He’d never really thought about it, he’d just always, sort of, went with it, whatever it might be. Do you love me? Her words kept replaying in his head. Would he leave if he did? Wouldn’t Lip try with all his will to stay with her if he loved her? He could refuse to go, get a job, and stay in that god forsaken town in the middle of nowhere, but with her. He could do that. And yet, it had never been an option? Stay for what exactly? Them? Was there even a them? Or was there just a Rory and a Lip? A Rory who was an actual ray of sunshine, and had been ever since he’d first gotten to know her. And a lip who’d been nothing but toxic, nothing but a troublemaker for them both. He’d done no good to her since going to that town, and that was why he hadn’t thought to stay. Because he knew he wasn’t good for her, and he just wanted the best for her. So maybe he did love Rory. It wouldn’t have been that difficult to say goodbye, to make himself be cold to her to make it easier, if he didn’t. Whatever the true answer was, Lip knew what his reply would be from the moment his body had froze at the question. He looked her in the eye. “No.” He rasped out, his head then shaking a little, softly, almost not moving. He swallowed. “I don’t.” And even though all he wanted to do was leave, Lip made himself stand there and watch her, he carved that image into his brain, he needed to know how bad he was for her. And hoped she wouldn’t see through him. She wouldn’t. She couldn’t.
“Maybe you should go.” He let out a dry laugh, having held in all he could, the vapor from his breath fogging his vision of her. She’d believed him. Good. That meant he could, too. That gave him hope that maybe he wouldn’t be that miserable away from her. “Yeah,” He took his hand up to rub his neck, “I guess I should.” Lip pushed his hands into his pockets. “Well, bye, I guess.” He turned around once more, wishing she would just go back inside, into the warmth of her house and away from the cold snowy streets. Two more steps and he reached his motorbike, not pausing before he flung a leg over it and sat down, pulling his helmet up onto his head.
“Silly of me to think you actually cared.” He heard her mumble through the freezing wind, but didn’t acknowledge it. He couldn’t. He opened his helmet so she could hear him. “Just go inside.” And drove away, hoping she hadn’t heard how wrong she’d been.
