Hi! So you speak like a million languages (#goals i only speak 2.5 languages) but which ones actually are they? And how/why did you learn them? P.S. your nursey fics give me life, heal my soul, etc etc i love your writing so much <333

ahahaha i definitely don’t speak a million--i speak english, spanish, and hebrew, and i’m trying to pick my next one but i’m not sure what to learn next. :) i learned spanish in school but the American educational system is Awful(tm), so i kept learning it on my own, through a lot of “learn-while-you-drive”, watching dubbed movies, tv shows, etc. i learned hebrew via immersion basically--my husband’s family all speak hebrew and that’s their default when they’re all together regardless of the language of whoever else is there (THANKS GUYS) so it was basically “learn or be totally lost.”

tbh the biggest problem i have with languages is that the one i need tends to abandon me when i need it? like, if i’m in a bodega, i could do some great talmud study but like fuck can i ask the dominican guy where the yogurt is, and if i’m hanging out with my in-laws, i could be an a+ translator in a washington heights hospital but all of a sudden i can’t remember the hebrew word for “spoon.” it’s a huge pain in the ass. 

like, literally, why even are languages a thing?

as a confused-about-my-bilingual-identity person myself, i just want to thank you profusely for all this discussion!! et surtout pour écrire en français c'est une breath of fresh fucking air et je l'adore, ya pas assez de fic en français!!! et la façon que t'écris dans les deux langues c'est tellement naturel et beau que je souris à chaque fois <3

aw ben merci :) identité culturelle: what is dat? man ça m’a pris des années pi des années (où j’étais intensivement intégrée dans le mouvement francophone minoritaire au canada) pour figurer out sort of mon identité culturelle so comme, stresse toi point trop la brain. ça va venir
