No, you don't understand. The more ungrateful, the more difficult, the more unmanageable a kid is in any caretaker story, the more I will adore it. It's about being loved not because you're obedient or mature or understanding or digestible, but for you. The work that goes into taking care of you is utterly irrelevant. It's about telling you to stop whining but never revealing I gave you the food off my plate so you won't go hungry, the clothes off my back so you won't go cold, because my love is not dependent on you making yourself convenient.
