Art cannot be separated from the artist completely, of course the faults of the artist are reflected in the art also, like racism, misogyny, many things.
But I feel like to some extent they can be separated. as a reader/ consumer of media many things become much more than just a piece of an artist’s repertoire to me; the things you love start to mean different things to you based on which parts of yourself they stir. You draw meaning which the maker might not have intended, I know I do. Art is open to interpretation and thus the artist’s intention of it isn’t the only thing that matters.
I think art is also about the viewer, listener, reader, beholder...and this goes for when something is co-opted by shitty people as well, like the ‘Peg The Patriarchy’ thing.
This is not an excuse for supporting racially/bigotry-motivated things though. Absolutely not. Your private experience of a thing being something completely different to the norm and being positive doesn’t mean that the thing itself is positive.
Art is a private experience to individuals, and I think in that capacity it can be separated from the artist. However, when you look at its societal impact, the artist’s rendering matters the most, or at least the most popular view of it.
