Fighting the literacy crisis one post at a time: day 2

Fighting the Literacy Crisis One Post at a Time - Day 1
Guys when a writer writes, "She spun on her heels." It doesn't mean she's doing a full 360 degrees ballerina style twirl. It means she is turned quickly to face the opposite direction, while keeping her heels (or one heel) to the ground, often in a swift or sliding motion.
I have read six books in 2026.
And I feel weirdly bad about that number. When I was in middle school, I could clear six books in a month or less. Those books were at or above my reading level. Now at 21, I’m easily sucked into my phone, I’m burnt out, I’m exhausted, and I’m BUSY. I am also facing chronic pain, brain fog, and fatigue. I read slower now. Being hard on myself for that only makes me want to read less and less because I’m not doing it the “right way” (Aka the way I did in middle school).
But I shouldn’t feel bad about reading “only six books.”
A recent survey showed that 41% of Americans read NO books in 2025 and a further 27% read 1-4 books. The graph is pictured below.
By reading just six books, I have read more than the majority of Americans in under half the year’s time.
If you’re seeing this post and feeling bad about reading slower than you used to—or maybe you could never read fast at all—you don’t have to. The literacy crisis in America is real. But even reading a few books this year is actively fighting back! Read as many as you can. Even just ONE is better than most people.
A link to the survey, if you want to know more!

40% of Americans who didn't read any books in 2025. The median American read two books.
Nothing illustrates the poor literacy rates in this country better an email from your team lead that DOESN’T MAKE ANY FUCKING SENSE. Ma’am did you read what you just wrote to me??? Can you even read? Because what the fuck is that? It’s certainly not English, Spanish, German, or any of the other languages I’ve dabbled in. For fuck’s sake. I’m not asking people to read Shakespeare on the regular or be grammar wizards, I’m certainly not, but it’d be cool if they could write coherent emails.
Streaming Services vs Chaos
When truth is told: the literacy levels of people living in western society would be far less helped if the information networks we are part of were not formulated the way they presently are. If these current information networks were instead dominated by people with less encouraging interests in mind our very literacy ability could well be lost to us.
Thank you streaming services for all you have done for us. You have designed and implemented a helpful literacy bridge that spans a gap between understanding and complete disorder.
p.s. does society really have so many guns in it?
Firearms remain the leading cause of death for ages 1–19
Q) If firearms remain the leading cause of death for ages 1-19, is this in America only?
A) Yes - firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens ages 1-19 specifically in the United States. This is not a global statistic; in most other countries, causes like road traffic accidents, infectious diseases, or cancer remain higher than gun related deaths.
it’s too late. i’ve already represented myself as the chad phonics-learned reader and you as the virgin sight-reading slop consumer.
Why is Frankenstein not mandatory reading? Not only does it teach students the implications and weight of creation (which I would think could be an easy way to shift into a talk God as a topic of discussion no matter religious beliefs as well as if needed an interesting and less awkward way to bring up sex ed), But it also brings into question general kindness and to think more about the idea of something being and not being worthy of kindness (human or not)! Its s simple but deep text, and a good into to classic literature! Which could ALSO could lead possibly to raising the literacy rates in school + adding actual critical thinking into the next generations education! Really I hope more schools in the USA will consider adding this to the more mainstream curriculum
