Final batch of fall reads, with a few transitioning into winter. 🍁📚❄️ I finished The Halloween Tree a while before this photo, but I wanted to include it because anyone who loves a good adventure story, Halloween, and the lore/origins of Halloween should read this book! I'm rereading Yule from the @llewellynbooks Sabbat Essentials series and The Old Magic of Christmas, bits from both of which - along with other research and knowledge of my own - inform my @soliloquyjewelry winter designs each year. the sun and her flowers, @rupikaur_'s follow up to her first poetry collection milk and honey, promises thus far to be as divine as its predecessor. This evening, I asked the cards “How did I engage in self care today?” I drew Pond, Elixer, Snail, Cat and Octavia Butler from The Literary Witches Oracle. 🐈 I love the way these cards lay it all out for me. I took the time to sit with myself and look within. I took the time to give myself care so that I could look after my health. I took ownership of my own body, mind and spirit today and l actually listened to what I needed as opposed to turning away from it. My future depends on taking care of myself. My body is a temple and I have to honour it. I also have to set a better standard for self care in my present so that my future is more beautiful. 🐌 I’d like to think that I was sitting by the pond with a friend, having a cup of tea while I watched Anakin who was watching a snail in the grass as we talked about what we wanted to do in the next five years. Today’s card is all about Story. I like to spread my cards out before I select one, stretch them out long like an undone fan. Then, I slowly move my hands over them (eyes closed) and pluck out the card that pulls my hand to it. Today, Zora Neale Hurston, one of my literary heroes, tugged my hand. Zora was a storyteller, an adventurer, a seeker. I think all writers are made up of these things in one way or another. I wrote a story as a sort of homage to her, The Snowbank. It’s out on submission now ... again. I hope one day the world gets to read it, and will be most pleased if someone says, “It’s reminiscent of Hurston’s __________.” I’m not going to tell you the title because I don’t want to sway you, should any of you ever get to read it. So, as the card says, today shall be about the story: mine, the story of others, and listening.
