what is the point of flattening an image?

The point is just to have everything more organized and in it's place basically so all the layers don't interfere with any other images. For example, if you want to move that image into a new document to make an edit with that picture, you can move everything freely with out having so much layers floating around the place. You use the flatten option when you are sure your done with your edit. Hope this made sense.
