I am trying a new thing by putting the new thing in the same world as the old thing, which simultaneously saves me some worldbuilding and makes me do a lot more. In this world, magic is localized and behaves differently in different regions. (It hasn’t occurred yet, but if you move too far from your home region, you stop being able to do your own magic whether you do everything right or not.) The old thing took place along a sea where people consider learning other people’s magic evil and call the people who do so witches, which is synonymous for traitor; the new thing takes place in an inland empire which is trying to expand to that sea for its trade routes, but they consider learning other people’s magic fairly de rigeur. This would cause conflict if they actually manage to expand as far as the sea, but they’re having problems enough as-is.

Namely with the marks. Their outermost marks have held for at least a hundred years and aren’t really troublesome anymore, but the lands outside have gotten wind that the empire wants to expand through them, and they’re not pleased about it. They’ve registered their displeasure by kidnapping the daughter and heir of the marquise of Frente, who doesn’t quite have enough soldiers to march after them with metaphorical guns blazing. So she sent back to the empress for reinforcements. Who sent... one court dandy.

Who is also a marquise, and this makes a difference, because of the way the empire’s home magic works, but I haven’t figured that out yet, and I have to go.

yeah there are certain words that i just don’t think look right in american english. “mustache” is one of them. (wanna trade? i can’t get my tex editor out of british english.)

Oh, I imagine I could swap over, and grey and moustache would thank me, but then along would come some word like honour or colour and, acceptable as I find those spellings, it would confuse me more than it helped in the long run. I shall simply have to accept the squiggly red lines every time I discuss Ronia’s facial hair.

Which program are you using? I could probably figure out how to change it. Shouldn’t be a big deal.
