Humanity, Modernity, and The 1975
The line “modernity has failed us” being one of the two repeating lines in the song is such a beautiful detail to include in the song’s writing. Throughout the song, Matty sings about the issues that have come with the modern world, society, and the way we behave as humans in the present world, and continuously ends the verses with that line. The repetition of it has an almost ironic sense to it, as he wouldn’t be able to create such a beautiful narrative without the modernity he speaks about.
Additionally, the effect of the line “i’d love it if we made it” being the only lyric in the chorus is absolutely incredible. In a world full of issues, and societal pressures and obstacles, it’s so crucial to remember that even when things don’t work out, life goes on. Nothing every truly ends. Memories live on through fairytales, feelings live on through your parents’ DNA being passed from their parents and being passed on to you. You go high up in the mountains, so high up that all you can see is the fog beneath you and tree-tops and it’s beautiful, and incredible, and you realise that our life as humans lives on when we die through millenias of vegetation, and will continue to when we’re all dead - when humans are a thing of myths (another man-made thing, mind you) and false hope.
For the one who grieves with hope in Christ, death does not have the final word. Those who die in Christ live on; it is simply a life we cannot see at the moment. There is so much hope in this truth!

“For a teller of tales will never die, but will live on in stories - for as long as there are folk to listen.”
