The Life of the Forest: Bryophytes
Bryophytes, i.e. three systematic groups, are extremely diverse in terms of form and shape.
They can be found in every ecosystem on Earth, including Poland. They are an indispensable component of Polish forests and other ecosystems.
In addition to accumulating greenhouse gases and water, they also have the very important function of delaying water runoff in the larger landscape system – the hydrological system in which they are located.
Despite their small size and the fact that we often pay attention to larger plants – colourful perennials, bushes with tasty fruits, impressive trees – let us not forget about bryophytes when hiking in the woods. It is worth going down to the stream valley, bending over a stone, a rock, the trunk of a dead tree...
And to look at and try to understand this rich and diverse world of forms and shapes of the bryophytes.

I break your door in I sneak in the basement It is my home now But you never find out Cause I am sneaky I am the rat man I go up at night And eat your cheese! Aaaah!
But one day you find out there is a rat man inside the basement and you call the cops But the cops don't take it seriously So you call the Ghostbusters instead!
The Ghostbusters Are ill-equipped They only have ghost busting weapons But they should’ve brought a shotgun But I have a gun so I kill them instead Oh no, it's murder!

frillworts
Zoopsis argentea! One of my favourite leafy liverworts, from the family Lepidoziaceae. This is one of our smallest liverworts in Australia- its lateral leaves are made up of just two cells. It's very common in the rainforests in eastern Vic where it's epiphytic on logs and tree ferns. It's a fun one to show students as it sort of breaks your brain about what constitutes a 'leafy' liverwort.

Everybody else is looking up at the big beautiful waterfall. Not me. I’m looking at the mud around the bottom. for liverworts.
it IS really funny that the two recognized liverwort growth forms are ‘a moss with barely discernible, somewhat contested microscopic differences’ and ‘someone’s dropped scalloped potatoes’
