An Adiantum pedatum (Northern maidenhair fern) nymph! I made her a year ago on a flight to visit my partner <3

gay tumblr artists only personality quiz: what color do u use to sketch before u outline
beaming my thoughts to the other lichen identification enjoyers in the audience, what are people using for their C/bleach tests? because i've got just like, straight liquid bleach ready to use, but it's... goopier/soapier than i remember it being in the lab when i did this in college. is there a thinner solution commercially available? or like, a solid form you can dissolve?
I usually buy my lichen chemicals from Home Science Lab, and they have small bottles of bleach (I also live in the US).
thanks for this, this is what I ended up doing! also noted that they have KOH too, I'm currently using NaOH I got from a craft store, which is a suitable substitute as far as I understand, but it's cool they have it AND in the little dropper bottles people say you should bring in the field, too. also putting this interaction in the post because its my live reaction
Nice! Yeah I moved and couldnāt fly with all my hazardous chemicals⦠still need to find a place to get PD but I think thatās gonna be the hardest one to get my hands on. For sure lmk if you figure out a place to get that one šš¼ I have never used lichen chemicals in the field but droppers do sound best unless you get the little capillary tubes which are sooooo nice.
i cant believe i have an answer to this equally incredibly specific lichen question but i do. i got mine off photoformulary.com after someone on here pointed me in that direction last year; apparently people use it to develop film, too! and they sell it in small amounts instead of in big jugs, I think 10 grams is what I have, which is enough for an immense amount of lichens. and I just got 90% isopropyl alcohol to make up the tiny bits of solution with. i store it in an empty glass baby food jar that i wrapped in tape and transferred the label to, since it's light sensitive.
the search for PD reminds me of the advice Brodo gives in 'The Lichens of North America', written in the 90s, where he advises the reader to get a bunch of your closest lichen friends together, pool your money, and purchase a big breaking bad jug of PD crystals from a chemical supplier. not because you need that amount of crystals- even between like 10 or 20 people, that's way more than you'd ever need for lichens- but because it was presumably not possible to buy like, small hobbyist amounts yet. and i'm just really fond of the picture that paints
Oh my god thank you!!! I am literally ordering as I write this. I saw that advice in Brodo too, the fact that lichens are 1 billion times easier to find than lichenologists is brutal.
Brodo made me picture like a chemical potluck where everyone brings all their little tricks and chemicals to share. But making that solution in bulk would 100% feel like Breaking Bad. Maybe a trick/chemical potluck could happen at the next Botany conference. I havenāt been to one since 2022 and it was so wild to see so many lichen people in once place. There were roughly 40/ the 800 people who came lol, including bryologists in that 40.
I got to use nitric acid for an ID which was cool and I really fucked up some TLC this summer and (mildly) poisoned myself with sulfuric acid. Iāve done it before FINE I just had crazy bad luck that week and even forgot some of my lichens. At least I didnāt lose them in my luggage I donāt know if I could emotionally recover from that.

I gotta make a potion out of little bits of very specific lichen that have certain compounds that I own. Like some cladonia, lecanora probably and hope that I do have a sample of usnia (I hope itās usnia) I pinched off a branch laying in the road 4? yrs ago that has gone through 3 moves in the container that a bunch of paperclips came in. This potion is for chemistry/identification reasons. Basically almost every lichen Iāve collected since 2021 needs to have some chemistry done and I need a Frankenstein lichen as a control š«
Update on this: I (mildly) poisoned myself
But the Frankenstein lichen was some Usnea I found on a fence years ago and some Lecanora muralis
I moved a couple of the branches of my tomato plant and a few min later I could smell that tomato plant smell. Like girl. I know youāre pissed at me I can SMELL it but have you considered that the tomato cage is there for your benefit. And that you should not be shoving your branches underneath the bars that they could go on top of comfortably. Theyāre there for YOU
