52. “ I‘m never going to be good enough for you, am i? “
Erik slammed down the shot glass, Crown Royal racing down his throat and into his stomach where it burned in a way that always made him feel alive. He took a quick drag off of his Marlboro, before letting his mouth open and words fall out in a jumble. Typical Erik. The Lost Boy. The man who would never mature past a sixteen year old boy, even when it was getting old at past twenty.
“What the hell are you talking about, Col?” He practically sneered, as his fingertips fidgeted along the rim of the glass, before he reached up to lick them off, one after the other. His head buzzed from the alcohol, shot glasses lined up in a row, and from the crowd who had been screaming his name not ten minutes ago.
“What do you want from me? You know who I am. Who we are. So what is this even about?” His eyes flickered to hers, but only momentarily, unable to keep them locked. He felt a pit of guilt inside of himself and it made him angry. Angry at himself. Angry at her. Angry at the entire fucking world. But something else lived in the emotions. Disgust. And that? It was directed only back at himself.
He stared out at the crowd, vision blurring and stomach churning. He lived the life of a rock star. Always had. But right now he felt like he was being forced to apologize for it. For himself. “Maybe you’re not ever going to be good enough,” he said after a long pause. “If you’re looking for me to hold your hand and buy you jewelry and whisper poems at night, it’s not me. It’s just not, but I’m sure you can find someone who will.”
The hurt crossed her face in a way that even he couldn’t look past now, but he kept going. Pressing it into the ground. Giving her an out to get the fuck away from him and make something of herself. “Get the fuck away from me,” he finished, the rest of the sentence only in his mind.
“Bartender, give me another shot - no, two shots.” He waited for her to walk way, his own oblivion on its way. The words rang in his ears, the ones he meant. But he knew this was the only way.
Get the fuck away from me before I fuck up your life too.
