Eventually we’ll need to choose usernames to differentiate ourselves by here, and we’ll probably make a mess of it. The names are for safety reasons-tumblr is a big place and people screenshot and save posts they like, which is fine-but this also means that we don’t want our names out and about everywhere we go, y’know? We’re not being sneaky, we’re just being private in this era of the internet.
We’ve a big system, so we often accomplish this by choosing a “theme” and giving everyone a username from that theme (ex. if we’re using cats as a theme, someone will use “panther” as a username, another will use “tiger”, another will use “cheetah” etc) and those who come out the most get first pick. We also have another label we give system members when we find them and give them a name, so even if their name changes the label they have won’t (sort of like an ID number). This is a complicated username system, especially for a big system such as ours so if it is implemented it has to be done early on. That being said, it works for it’s intended purpose.
If you’re plural and have also been wondering how to protect your identities while online, this could be a good way. You can all still be out and online, but it reduces the risk of something going wrong if you’re out in a precarious place.
