Our voyage inside this manuscript ends with these very interesting astronomical diagrams, especially of the Earth, in red and black. Once again, we can use this manuscript to dismiss the common notion of the Middle Ages as a period of time during which people believed the Earth was flat.

LJS 264 - Ymage du monde [Part 1]

This manuscript is so beautiful that it deserves three different posts. 

The text tries to contain all the knowledge, divided into 3 parts: the creation of the world and the human kind, geography, and astronomy. Besides the text, however, it is impossible not to notice how the scribes convey their imaginations in drawings, letters, and monsters of all kinds. It was written in France around the year 1400.

Video Orientation to the University of Pennsylvania Library's LJS 264 -  Image du monde.  Written in France, ca. 1400, in Middle French. 

Dot Porter, Curator of Digital Research Services, offers a video orientation to LJS 264. This poem contains a summary of all knowledge, divided into 3 parts on the creation of the world and man, geography, and astronomy; copy of the earliest recension in 6,600 octosyllabic lines of verse, as composed in 1245 by Gautier of Metz.

Let’s continue our voyage in this wonderful manuscript. Another aspect worth noting is how the scribe works with the ascending and descending parts of the letters, creating drawings and fun doodles that go further than the page itself.
