Ms. Codex 4 - In universam Aristotelis Logicam quaestiones

This manuscript consists of questions about Aristotle's logical works, the Organon. Each of the questions (topics) is subdivided into arguments. Look how beautiful are the floral decorations of the first page and - even more! - of the last. It was written in Italy in 1638.

LJS 264 - Ymage du monde [Part 3]

Our voyage inside this manuscript ends with these very interesting astronomical diagrams, especially of the Earth, in red and black. Once again, we can use this manuscript to dismiss the common notion of the Middle Ages as a period of time during which people believed the Earth was flat.

LJS 264 - Ymage du monde [Part 1]

This manuscript is so beautiful that it deserves three different posts. 

The text tries to contain all the knowledge, divided into 3 parts: the creation of the world and the human kind, geography, and astronomy. Besides the text, however, it is impossible not to notice how the scribes convey their imaginations in drawings, letters, and monsters of all kinds. It was written in France around the year 1400.

Ms. Codex 1577 - Fioretti di San Francesco

Saint Francis is probably one of the most famous saints of the Middle Ages. This manuscript is called “Fioretti di San Francesco” [Little Flowers of Saint Francis] and contains stories and legends about him and his followers, plus several other texts related to the Franciscans. You can see the Saint himself depicted in the wonderfully decorated “P” that opens this work.  This manuscript was written in northern Italy, possibly Venice or Ferrara, between 1460 and 1480.

Ms. Codex 696 - [Theological Miscellany]

This is a recollection of different theological texts written in Germany between  1250 and 1399 C.E. and originally from different manuscripts. Among the texts one can find there are the Liber scintillarum,  the “De pugna spirituali”, and excerpts from the “De contemptu mundi” by  Pope Innocent III [1160/1161 – 1216].

Ms. Roll 1563 - [Devotional Roll]

The beauty of rolls! This is a roll of prayers in Latin (with some rubrics in Middle English), with some portions unfortunately illegible.  It was written in England in the 15th century.

Ms. Codex 11  - In universam Aristotelis logicam breve compendium

This manuscript was written by Antonius Roddier in 1611 in Bourges, at the Jesuit Academy. It is a Commentary on Aristotle's Organon in the form of lectures given in 1611 by the Jesuit priest Pater Lebel. It is in Latin with a second hand that writes notes in French.
