Volume I, book ii: The Winners

To give the Volume 1 polls time to run through fully before starting on the next volume, I’ll be cataloging the winning translations/translators as well as some of my favorite observations on the posts!

I.ii.1

Hapgood's "The Evening Of A Day Of Walking" won with 25.2%, but Wraxall's "The Close Of A Day's March" was close behind!

I.ii.2

Hapgood wins again with 32.4%, for "Prudence Counselled To Wisdom".

Just some of @winter-parrot's detailed notes on this one-- thank you for sharing some great analysis!

I agree, a lot of people seem to like preserving cognates and word order.

I will admit, the reason I made this an actual poll was solely to see how big the sweep was and to read the Reactions. And oh man it delivered. 90.2% for literally everyone except Denny. Ah, it's so fun to poke at this translation from time to time.

I talk about Denny's Certified Denny Moments a lot, but is it really slander if everything said is objectively true?

Another Hapgood win this round! 51.5% with "Details Concerning The Cheese-Dairies Of Pontarlier"; Walton's "Some Details on the Cheese-Making of Pontarlier" is about half that, and the rest of the votes are spread pretty thin.

I agree; Wilbour's winning The Depths of Despair (44.9%) is a good and close translation, but I think Wraxall's was underappreciated here!

This one was pretty evenly split besides Wilbour and Wraxall's (I guess it's a W&W L 😔); Hapgood's "Billows and Shadows" won out, though, at 22%. This is one of my favorite chapter titles, and I do like all of the translations to some degree. It has such a wonderful shape to it. (<- and as does the poll-- the results form a nice wavy curve!)

Wilbour and Walton won with 30.5%, but I do want to address my condolences to Wraxall for his uh. 0% of votes.

I.ii.10

This is one of those cases where Linguistic Drift hits a translator particularly hard. Ah, Hapgood. The Unintentional Comedy of it all.

Wilbour, Hapgood, and Donougher's "What He Does" got 54.1% of the vote. And honestly I'm pretty impressed when any result in these polls gets above like a 40%; opinions seem to get pretty divided.
