The Sweetness of the Morning - New music from Tiny Leaves for Piano Day 2021
A new quiet filled the air last spring as nature had the chance to become loud again through lockdown. Instead of the sound of traffic, I noticed the chorus of life in the garden: the abundance of bees, birdsong and new blooms. I wanted to respond to this in music, with sounds equally as hopeful, light and delicate as the unfolding of life in spring.
I’d recently moved house just before the first lockdown, things were unsettled with the pandemic shutting everything down and the move away from my former home studio was surprisingly emotional. I was relieved to discover a sudden, all-encompassing rest come over me with roads falling silent and this new garden waking up, abundant with life.
After spending a few years on the last album, which I had held so close for such a long time, I felt like I wanted to create something light and unworked in this new space. The awakening of spring was the perfect backdrop to a handful of musical sketches that had no aim but to redraw in music what was going on outside. I also begun to create a playlist of music which felt light, whimsical and joyful including artists which perfectly soundtracked this season.
With repeated lockdowns over the year, plans to record accompanying instruments were put on hold until this spring so I’m thrilled to be able to revisit some of these tracks and finish them ready for an EP which will be coming out in June.
