It had been way too long since the last time Lorenz and Adrian last went on a vacation together, so what a relief it was, when they could finally see each other long enough to plan their next trip, so they could depart hand in hand for some sightseeing in corners of the world they'd never enjoyed together... How romantic, how complementary, to get away from it all for a short while, when they were at their best; ie: in each other's company!

Yeah, right.

Not even four days after they bought the bus tickets, Lorenz found out he was gonna be held up for an important tournament in Fuschia City for a day longer than what was originally planned, and he and Adrian kind of got into an argument over this... Until they finally agreed on how they were going to organize, to reunite, and to finally be together.

At the very least, their destination wasn't that far from Kanto, so it wasn't like Lorenz was gonna make his boyfriend wait for more than a day. Indeed, the two of them had decided to go together to explore the province of Kitakami, where a sizeable portion of Lo's father's side of the family lived.

And, since Lorenz did not absolutely hate his uncles and cousins there, he gave them a call, and it was agreed on that Adrian would go ahead and stay at their house in Mossui before they could be reunited.

At least that was the plan. But when he finally arrived to the bus stop after a grueling seven hours ride, Adrian would find, as soon as he'd stepped out in front of the region's famous rice farms, that somebody was waiting for him. A younger girl, probably barely eighteen, who alternated rapidly between staring at him and at the screen of her Poké Gear. Finally she shrugged and walked all the way to him, her back hunched, like she clearly would rather have been literally anywhere else.

She was short and stout. Pouty. A bit stocky around the shoulders. Olive skinned. Had bushy purple hair. Didn't really take a genius to guess why she went for him specifically.

"Hi, is it you? Adrian, I mean." She finally asked. "You look a lot more... normal than I imagined."

He was already drooling over his pillow when Adrian broke the relative silence of the night. It took him a certain measure of extra time to first pull himself awake, and then make sense of his boyfriend’s words. When his brain was finally up to speed, he blew through his nose.

“Y’know, that’s a pretty morbid thing to think about.”

He began shifting under the sheets, bothering Cookie who was sleeping at the foot of the bed. Adrian would then feel one arm wrap around him, followed by Lorenz’s breath over his nape as he positioned himself into an optimal spooning position. He let out a hum of deep reflection, before a response came to his lips, clear and undebatable.

“Drifloon.”

Despite us being in enemy teams, I kinda liked you when we first met. Thought we could be good buds. Then we did, and I learned more about you. Then I found we had a lot in common. And that’s precisely when I started hating your guts.

Gave you hell for years. Physically and emotionally abused you. Did shit I still get sick in my stomach thinking about. Enjoyed every second of it. I’m really the fucking worst, ain’t I?

Then you were there when nobody was. When I lost my eye. When all hell broke loose and I returned to Johto. We took what we had and fixed it… Or rather, you fixed it all by yourself and guided me along. You always were the one holding the two of us together, even when you were yourself on the brink of breaking.

You were what I was afraid of becoming and now you’re everything I wish I was. Why did you still think I was worth it? How can you even stand me after all I did to you?

You’re all that matters to me now. Please let it stay that way.

He passed the tips of his fingers over the grid again, feeling the absence of a sticker over the square regarding his time in Aqua. When he thought about it, his regrets regarding that time had dulled quite a lot in the past few years. From memories he could barely live with, to an undeniable part of their history, from which they'd grown closer and became what they were now. That would be the one case the square being left unchecked was probably for the best...

He turned toward Adrian again and pulled him a little closer,burying his face in his neck.

"I wouldn't be where I am now without you either. You were always gonna turn out just fine. I'm just lucky you looked back and pulled me along."

Ah, fuck, was that getting a bit too sappy? See, that was the annoying part of letting this idiot rub off on him; he was starting to sound more and more like a fucking nerd. Before he could feel the urge to shove himself inside a locker, Lorenz split the embrace, and poked at noseboy's painfully average pectorals, giving him his signature shit-eating smirk.

"Though, I guess y'started getting these thanks to me, so I can't sell myself short, can I?"

He was scratching Cocoa's ears while she rested her head on his lap, Cowak was also roaming somewhere around the couch, while Paon was sleeping in a basket in the corner. Adrian, he could hear, was sitting at the table hard at work doing... something or other. Not sure he would even be able to guess what, even if he could see more than gray smears.

That vacation in Sinnoh didn't feel too bad, at the very least Adrian's childhood home was a lot roomier than their apartment in Goldenrod. But, as the show they left playing on the old CRT screen failed to hold his attention yet again, Lorenz was starting to realize just how bored he was.

"Hey, Ad."

He leaned back, turning toward his boyfriend.

"You wanna go out for ice cream or something?"

Cowak's head perked up. Paon's ears, however, did not even twitch.

It's TMI Twenesday Or As I Like To Call It (Accepting)

"Let's see... I guess I was bummed out when Agatha retired 'cause I never missed any of her battles. The Elite 4's exhibition matches have just not been as good since she left... Though I guess Karen's been doing a good job almost picking up the slack."

"Ah, and I haven't seen that asshole in a hot minute but he's probably the one missing me." He paused briefly for his corporate-mandated (he's corporate) signature shitty smirk. "I guess Cowak and I will go down to Mason's joint and see how he’s holding up one of these days."

"Let's see who else... Well, Ad's been away for some expedition in Sinnoh, but I can hardly miss someone I'm texting every day, right? Gotta enjoy having our big bed for myself while I still can."

Yeah, that was it. He did not miss anybody else. Not another soul. Not a single being in the entire world he was desperate to see again.

For some reason, the tattoo on his lower back began to itch.

Ghost Starters for the Ghost Boy

Whether Adrian was trying to be helpful or was subtly trying to say he wasn’t so sure about their little expedition was anyone’s guess. So naturally, Lorenz went for the option he found the most likely, which was that the damn nerd was shaking in his boots.

“Come on dude, I thought you were over this. If you’re gonna complain, I’m leaving your ass at the Pokémon Center next time.” He said, pulling his bandana up to shield his face from all the dust they were rising in the abandoned study.

There sure was no ominous shadow at the periphery of his vision. Not a single Ghost-type to be seen, nor any sign of occult activities. That had to be the lamest abandoned house he ever trespassed on.

“I don’t even know why we bothered. There’s absolutely nothing here.”

It seemed as thought the house itself heard that and was determined to prove him wrong, however. Lorenz and Adrian could suddenly hear a loud piercing howl coming from the open door they entered from, swiftly followed by the floorboards above them creaking menacingly.

Lorenz unconsciously grabbed onto Adrian’s arm and yanked him closer, before he realized what he just did and pretended he just randomly felt like holding his boyfriend by his shoulders. He tried really hard to force a smile as he walked toward the dark corridor.

"W-Well, that’s probably a Pokémon, right? Haha, it’s just a funny time of year for Misdreavi to nest, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary! ... Right?”
