Stop Reducing New Team Avatar To A "Love Triangle": A Masterclass In Platonic Ride-Or-Die Synergy
Let’s be entirely real for a second because I am absolutely exhausted by the shallow, nostalgia-blinded rhetoric in the Avatar fandom. If your only take on Korra, Asami, Mako, and Bolin is "oh, they’re just the messy group that swapped spit in Book 1," you are completely missing the blueprint of one of the most emotionally complex, fiercely loyal teams in animation history.
It is time to look past the ATLA favoritism goggles and talk about how New Team Avatar actually operates. They aren't perfect, they get on each other's nerves, but their bond in Books 1, 3, and 4 is an absolute masterclass in ride-or-die chemistry.
Let's break down the actual roles they play, because individual excellence breeds team supremacy:
🔥 KORRA: The Powerhouse Leader
• The Blueprint: She is the Chosen One, a absolute Tomboy with a brilliant Girly Girl Streak.
• The Dynamic: She acts as the ultimate Leader, the Brawn, and the absolute Powerhouse of the unit.
• The Heart: Don't let her raw strength fool you—she is an All-Loving Heroine, a Cool Big Sister Figure, and a Friend to All Living Things. She is a Badass Adorable Ace, but also a beautifully vulnerable Broken Ace who carries the weight of the world on her shoulders.
🪨 BOLIN: The Heart & Muscle
• The Blueprint: He is the Fun One and the ultimate Comic Relief, but don't you dare reduce him to just jokes.
• The Dynamic: He serves as the vital Mediator of the group, functioning as The Big Guy and the literal Muscle (hello, lavabending?!).
• The Heart: He is an All-Loving Hero, a passionate Foodie, and a total Dork Knight. He is Badass Adorable personified, keeping the team grounded and filled with joy when the world is literally ending.
⚡ MAKO: The Tactical Anchor
• The Blueprint: The Straight Man, the Cynic, and the ultimate Combat Pragmatist.
• The Dynamic: He is the Long-Ranger Fighter, the Responsible One, and often steps up as the De Facto Leader when chaos hits.
• The Heart: He is the Spock of the group—highly analytical and logical. He functions as an Ace and a Broken Ace, driven by a fierce Big Brother Instinct forged on the streets. He doesn't talk about his feelings; he protects your life.
⚙️ ASAMI SATO: The Brains & Lady of War
• The Blueprint: A brilliant Girly Girl with a fierce Tomboy Streak. A true Beauty Queen who can dismantle a mech in seconds.
• The Dynamic: She is The Brains, the Gadgeteer Genius, the Pilot, and the Driver. She provides the literal strategy and technology that keeps a team of benders alive.
• The Heart: She is the Voice of Reason and the absolute Heart of the group. As an All-Loving Heroine, a Girly/Genius Bruiser, and a true Lady of War, she is a Badass Normal and a Combat Pragmatist. She is a Badass Bookworm Ace who lost everything but still chose compassion.
To the critics who say they "have no chemistry other than the love triangle"—are we watching the same show?!
True friendship isn't a flawless, conflict-free monologue. New Team Avatar features messy, real, traumatized young adults growing up under the intense pressure of global revolution. They don't always get along. They clash. They snap.
But when the chips are down? They are ride-or-die. Mako and Bolin will dive into explosive combat for Korra. Asami will rebuild an entire infrastructure to keep them safe. Korra will unleash cosmic energy to shield them. They have each other's backs no matter what.
Stop penalizing them just because they aren't the ATLA Gaang. New Team Avatar has a beautiful, modern, resilient dynamic, and it's time we start giving them the respect they deserve!
how do you feel abt the lok characters (not the clones, i mean characters like kuron, franz, pasgard n such)
I don't normally think too much abt them but I think they are indeed very interesting.
Especially because there's a lot of story potential with citizen characters who feel the concequences of their ruler's actions on their very skin. Their POV tells a lot about the world they live in, even more than the clone's POV which usually focuses more on their own reactions and internal struggles caused by the world they created.
Clones do not percieve or feel Card World the same way the citizens do. Clones do not suffer the same concequences as their citizens. True, both clone's and citizen's struggles are caused by clones themselves, sort of like two sides of the same coin.
Best example is Zontopia, where we meet a lot of citizens (ofc narrative reason for the greater inclusion being Brolly feels a great bond to them despite being scared). All of Brollys interactions with the citizens tell us a great deal about the development in his country.
In any case, exploring both clones and citizens sides is fun. Although so far, we mostly get clones pov because the plot focuses more on clone's character development. The citizens POV could be expanded more outside clone interactions, so far the only citizen to citizen interactions in main lok tomes that haven't really included clones was just Aru's POV, any other citizen has directly interacted with a clone at one point (if I remember correctly, I'm not the side characters expert, that's @s0ckh3adstudios ).
In any case I hope we get more citizen pov in lok in the future.
I especially hope we meet more named citizens from countries we haven't seen much yet, like Kurograd, Waruland, Verona (no lady in Verona has a name as far as I know, shame, right?) or Spade Empire... Gabriland? (In general any country besides Zontopia and Felicia lol).
Tbh lack of citizens interaction could be seen as lack of worldbuilding, and you know I have a beef with Land of Kings for not having enough worldbuilding. /lh
As for citizens we already know, they're cool but I didn't get too attatched to them. Would be fun to see any of them interact outside of clone interactions.
Also citizen designs are usually like, hit or miss. As in hit is like, thats an okay design, and miss is ew.
I like Kuron, I know hes a polite guy but I wish we could see how he feels about his job and clones.
Also, Hundsgugel is fun. What an ugly creature, definetley underappreciated. Single handedly predicts the plot of the story. What other character does that? Brolly can only dream about it.
Toph has canonically fucked
As well as Iroh, Azulon, Sozin, Roku, Ta Min, Ozai, Ursa, Hakoda, Kya, Kanna, Aang, Katara, Tenzin, Pema, Zuko etc – everyone who canonically have children.
You know who had no children we know about and yet – canonically – fucked a lot?
Kuruk.

//I'm going to go into character analysis mode here, but seriously, guys.
Think about it for a moment. Before Mako came to the Triple Threats to ask them for help with their little sting operation, Varrick must have beat them to it first. Because Viper says they were paid to keep Mako and Asami "distracted."
So, now, we have Shady Shin here who's almost assuredly in on the whole thing when Mako's first offer in exchange for their help is to talk to Korra about getting his bending back.
And the first face Shin makes is that wide-eyed sort of shocked expression. There’s almost this kind of light, a kind of hope in his eyes. Sure, they were given a job, they’re going to be getting paid who knows how much money to keep Mako and Asami distracted, but maybe... just maybe... this once in a lifetime opportunity could be seized upon. Maybe, Shin probably rationalizes in that brief moment, getting his bending back would be considered more important and more useful to the Threat triad than the money they’re being offered.
But of course, that’s all dependent on one thing: the boss. The guy who replaced Lightning Bolt Zolt (who, need I remind you, lost his bending... and has probably lost his life one way or another somehow down the road). What the boss says goes. Shady Shin is on thin ice as it is just struggling to keep his head above water and keep himself useful.
The boss gives him a look. The look might have said something along the lines of, “We’re not botching this job, just so you can get your bending back. The money on the line is too good.”
And all at once, any hope Shin had is dashed. He looks away from the boss, and he closes his eyes. His shoulders slump. Because he knows. He knows he’s going to stab Mako in the back because of a job. He knows he’s not getting his bending back. There’s nothing he can do.
When you cut to later... Shin mentions to Viper that he has a hot date that night. And he probably does. But I also get the feeling that he really doesn’t want to be there, just in general... and that maybe cuddling up to a woman would help him feel better about missing his chance to have his bending back.
