@daily-writing-challenge August 2022 Day 3: Sentimental
The city of Novitzholita was supposed to be a good thing. A nice, large, populous city to get lost in, with plenty of things to keep Lokii busy. And it had, it had been an exhausting number of weeks. Yet it brought a lot of negativity for them. Worry for their companions, threat of the local militia, dancing around the gang that seemed to be endless in numbers in every place of civilization they traveled to. That was before they encountered Halim, too. Before Halim brought them the knowledge that time was even more strange and even less understood than they thought. The knowledge that returning home may be dramatically more different than they ever imagined. After Halim, Lokii had sought out Rune. She had confirmed that Halim’s revelation was true. But then...
"Stars, this has been sentimental." Their voice was not their own. She had been smiling under her mask when she replied. "You know, I like having conversations with you when you're sentimental...”
It left them with a sour taste in their mouth. They felt soft, and weak. Being sentimental is what brought them to where they are. Being soft and weak cost them everything they ever cared about. The pocket watch had only made the feelings worse, rather than soothe them. And then the ideas of song which were a great direction, ended with the same lack of creativity they have had for months. So instead- maybe even subconsciously- they decided to twist the knife. Pain was an excellent teacher. Yes, that surely was the reason they found the privacy and their pack. The reason they let their heart ache even knowing what they were seeking, hidden securely at the bottom of their bag.
The wooden box was finely made. Once used to house a gift to them. Now, it houses many gifts they were given during that year. Lokii exhaled a heavy sigh and double checked- they were alone. Even if someone found them- their companions would not ask. And they would not tell.
The box probably releases a wave of perfume and scents as they open it, but they can’t detect them. Between their curse and the mask, most scents were lost to them. Not that they needed the additional kick to the gut. Even just seeing the stack of letters beside various little trinkets and other gifts intended for them sent their heavy mixture of emotions into a wave that rocked them. The smaller than expected raven’s skull barely fit with everything else and stood out- the thing that didn’t belong. So they removed that first, setting it aside. Then there were the other things, so they could access the letters bound by twine. A necklace, an artfully decorated container that now holds petals of countless flowers stashed inside, more jewelry, vials of perfume, a glass box with a perfectly preserved flower inside. The paper was just as fine as everything else, and their thumb passed lovingly over the handwriting spelling out their true name on top.
It hurt. Stars, did it hurt, to even see the items. Each breath felt heavy and left their insides with a fresh surge of ache. But they wanted that pain. So they spent their time, combing through letter after letter in the set. Reading over times long past. Times they would never be able to forget.
Sentimentality caused them pain and suffering. But pain is an excellent teacher.
