Titania Snape in a recent past loved Sirius Black with every fiber of her heart and couldn't find in herself the will to stop her unexpected pregnancy. Even though the feelings weren't mutual because Sirius was only toying with her, it didn't change the fact that a life was conceived in her belly at the happiest moment of her life, no matter how brief it had been.
So she decided to keep the baby and at June 27th, 1982, Titania gave birth to Mordred Snape. His hair was pure black like hers and he had the same eyes as his father. Even if she tried to keep the paternity a secret from Narcissa, she was sure her friend would quickly discover it anyway. It was Cissy who pointed out that Mordred's eyes had the same colors as hers because it was a common trait from the blood of House Black. Only then downed on Titania that the same specific shade of gray also presented itself in Regulus, Bellatrix, Andromeda and Draco.
Titania felt her heart stop by the fear of someone discovering that the father of her baby was a traitorous killer and most hated Death Eater still alive on Earth. At the moment Sirius Black was possibly more loathed than Lord Voldemort himself ever was.
Of course Narcissa read the distress all over Titania's face and soon put a hand over her arm to tranquilize her friend. "Don't worry about it, Tanya, I doubt anyone will give too much thought about the eyes of your son," Cissy sighed, looking at her feet. "The House Black is in decay, at least in name. Our bloodline may carry on, but Sirius is the last heir alive from the main branch and the name of our House will die with him," The blonde witch flashed a sad smile. "We only need to be cautious in front of the few members of House Black still free and alive in my family," She gave another sigh. "I doubt you'll ever cross paths, though. Most of them are old and don't leave their homes. Andromeda was disowned and even if she looked at your son, she wouldn't tell anyone, I'm sure of it," Narcissa stared deeply into Titania's eyes. "Lucius may notice but I'll deal with him in case that happens," She squeezed Titania's hand, reassuringly.
Titania breathed out, relaxing. "I already thought too much about it and I'm aware about the prejudice my son and I will suffer in our society," She looked at Cissy with teary eyes. "Now imagine what may happen with us if it’s discovered that my son is the bastard of a mass murderer?" Titania blinked and the tears fell on her cheeks. "I only hope my son won't hate me,"
"He won't," Cissy gave another squeeze on Titania's hand. "You might be single, but you aren't alone. I will help you raise my lovely godson!"
Since Titania was a kid she had a hard life, and even after going to Hogwarts things never really get better. After all trials and suffering that life gave her, the gods truly blessed Titania with an angel in form of a child.
It was unfathomable to Titania how a combination of hers and Sirius' genes were able to produce such a perfect human being. Because she couldn't find a better choice of word to describe her son, he was nothing but perfection. He was a child coming out of a dream —healthy, beautiful, caring and gentle. Mordred had a good temper, was docile and sweet, nothing alike his parents and perhaps in this Titania could see a flaw.
Mordred was such a sweet and lovely kid that part of Titania feared that in the future her son would be an easy target for bullies or ill-intentioned people. Both she and Sirius were difficult to deal with though they knew how to fight and protect themselves. Mordred was not a fighter, far from it. He had an easy smile and was way too sensitive. Titania couldn't recall seeing her son angered and the rare moments he showed sadness usually happened when a creature was mistreated or got hurt in front of him —Lucius stopped beating the House-Elf Dobby because it always made Mordred cry and all the Malfoys had a soft spot for her son.
She was truly afraid of her son being such a good soul that someone could easily break him, but she found comfort in knowing that Draco would probably act like a protective big brother at Hogwarts and only someone really stupid would dare to confront directly a Malfoy.
Each day passed Mordred grew more and more like a copy of his father, the only difference between her son and the old photos of Sirius as a child that Cissy showed her was the hair. Mordred had the same straight jet-black hair as Titania's and that only fit better on his features. It was easy to see that her son would be more handsome than his father and probably taller though not bulky as Sirius, but slender and gracious.
Besides the hair, Titania couldn't see much of herself in her son, even in personality, not that she was complaining. He actually reminded her much more of Regulus —reserved, quiet, clever and observant. Though Regulus was haughty and pampered while Mordred was quite the opposite. Regulus also had a sharp tongue and loved teasing people in the worst ways imaginable while Mordred was very careful about offending the others.
Sometimes it was like her son had a six sense about topics that could made people uncomfortable and used to avoid them. She noticed his curiosity grow whenever someone asked her who was his father, but until now, he never pushed her to answer further about this matter and she always answered to the others that his father was just a muggle affair who died at the war and usually was enough.
Mordred was too wise for a kid at his age, he was always eager to help Titania on her daily chores and didn't complain about the ones he had himself. She was most than sure that at least she was raising a functional and helpful person. And no matter how rotten-spoiled Narcissa tried to turn her Godson into, Mordred seemed unaffected by it. He didn't care about having or not expensive toys or clothes, he looked equally satisfied in receiving expensive presents from his Godmother and the simple ones Titania could afford, and even more satisfied if they were comics or books —even though Mordred was still learning to read, he liked to see the pictures.
Despite the fact Titania was a half-blood witch raised in muggle environment, she never nurtured much fondness about non-magical things, even technology. However she insisted on showing as much as she could about the both worlds for her son and even hired muggleborn wizards and witches to teach him the same muggle subjects he could learn at school, and at Malfoy's Manor he was taught by Draco's tutors and would have the same knowledge as the finest pure-blood wizards. Titania couldn't be more proud!
Draco was oblivious about the blood bond he shared with Mordred but loved him as if he was his younger brother. It didn't take long for them to call each other 'Godbrother' considering Titania was Draco's Godmother. The blonde boy often stayed on Titania's house and loved to watch TV and read comics to Mordred. Narcissa couldn't care less seeing her son learn about muggle culture, but the four of them were very careful to keep it as a secret from Lucius.
Mordred loved plants and small creatures, Titania often caught Mordred observing small insects or spiders at their garden. She had all types of salves and concoctions in case he was stung or bitten by anything, though that never happened. What was most common was him appearing at her desk asking her to heal a disgusting critter and it crushed her heart whenever he showed a sad expression whenever nothing could be done to save them. Titania offered to buy him a pet once, but he declined, saying he preferred to see the animals free. He was also good with people, Mordred had a few muggle friends of his own in the neighborhood and had the natural talent to befriend people. No one considered her son a freak, not even the hateful muggles. Titania was happy that Mordred didn't have a childhood like hers and was surrounded by people who loved him.
In a way fate was ironic, because the same man who ripped her heart in shreds was the same person who gifted her with never-ending happiness.
