🔥 hmm...Star Fox??
i'm not entirely sure what of my opinions of the overall series are unpopular but? i can talk abt the series as a whole
i've only been into star fox for... over a year now, so my knowledge is more than likely still very limited as to the games, bc i only have 3 games (or would it be 2 and a half bc starlink isn't a sf game first and foremost?), and i've gotten started with 2 of them and haven't opened one of them yet, mostly bc i've found that i'm bad at the games and motivation to play video games has been rough for a while for me
but, star fox itself, the overall series, objectively, is mediocre.
NOW, are the games fun? yes, they are, or well, they can be. do the games have a lot of fun potential to play around with? yes, they do. but story wise and game play wise OVERALL, it's fine.
you've got your "really really greats" like 64, and you've got your "shitpiles" like command (i personally think command is fine but then again i've never played it and i'm going off of what i've seen even though i've seen ppl have rather mixed views on the controls), but even well loved games like assault, ppl say they love the story and the characters, but gameplay? i've seen mixed thoughts on that.
my personal feelings are that the overall series is decent. it wouldn't be a series if it didn't have its great moments and its shitty ones. want me to be honest? i think starlink shows the best potential for: dialogue. the writing for it made the game feel so much more fun (for the star fox stuff) like small moments such as falco saying "oh i know what it is, it's a toaster :)" or fox and slippy laughing at peppy's rlly bad joke and falco audibly groaning, moments like that.
dialogue is an essential part of the series and always has been, snes, 64, zero, they've got those quick, quippy, quotable lines (say that ten times fast)
is dialogue the MOST important thing? well, not for a franchise like this, but it's influential enough that ppl seem to rlly focus on it, like command, ppl do not like command and say the characters are OOC, and i've honestly laughed at the dialogue, a lot, it's hilariously bad but it's charming that way to me.
that's my thing ig: if it makes me laugh, i like it.
star fox, always makes me laugh
and some ppl want more "serious" stuff like assault was but... was assault really that serious? it wasn't dark and gritty like dc movies try to be, i think ppl have a habit of seeing smth with more high stakes (if star fox doesn't defeat the aparoids they will take over the lylat system and take over ppl's bodies) which are serious, but not the kind of serious they think it is. tbh whenever i watch assault, i'll admit, i think it's a bit cheesy at points, but that's 2005 child friendly "serious" for you.
will nintendo after go all the way in and make a gorey, "dark", game, no. they won't. will they ever make smth like afis? no. they won't.
do i think they should?
no. i don't.
star fox is at it's best when it's cheesy, fast paced, and silly.
