SFTH FAQ and Info Masterpost
Note: I update this post with new links to helpful stuff occasionally, but other than that, this was made a while ago :)
hi I actually love your ruthlessness animatic and its the reason I got into epic in the first place so id just like to ask how you design your characters?? your Poseidons design is really cool
Happy to know that my animatic introduced newcomers to EPIC! :D
So my process of designing a character always starts with trying to achieve a characterization that I want to highlight. From there, I gather references, references, and more references! I take inspiration from other media, arts, or photos. The way I came up with Poseidon is based on a headcanon of mine: that Poseidon is a representation of death and everything that Odysseus does not want to become, but ultimately, whether he realizes it or not, has already become.
The death motif is represented by the horse. It was inspired by, of course, the myth of Demeter and Poseidon, but it was also inspired by the novel "The Foretelling" by Alice Hoffman, where the main character is haunted by a black horse with red eyes. Not gonna spoil anything from it because it's genuinely a good book, but you can guess that the horse represents death. Then the idea of him having glowing eyes and teeth were inspired by all those creepy pictures from the Mandela Catalogue series, but I also saw pictures of horses showing their teeth, and that was scary enough for me to include.
So my first drawings of Poseidon were actually of his horse form. And I just loved the visual of a horse running on the waves!
When I started to create his human form, I had in mind to make him look like the horse and the human form were the same person. So at first, he had only black clothing, but I ended up changing it because I just knew that people would associate him more with Hades. So that's why he wears white instead.
I wanted to portray Poseidon as a father who has experienced pain and seeks revenge.
So he has tear streaks that show that he has recently been crying. His clothing is very loose and exposed, indicating that he didn't tend to himself before hunting Odysseus. He has black, silky hair due to his horse form having black, silky hair.
Something else that I also tend to do is not make an overly cluttered design. I'm not really into heavy detailing. I am much more keen on having details, but making them subtle and using shapes to tell a story.
And something that I really like about character design is to have characters designed to contrast with each other.
A good example is my designs of Hera and Zeus! Zeus is dressed in light clothing because he is the opposite of Hera, she is wearing heavy veiling. But I also really like to use shape languages. So Zeus has a large chest and the usage of clouds makes his upper body look big. So he will always look bigger than you. And Hera is the opposite again, her veil makes all the volume push down, and she looks small compared to Zeus, but she still takes up a lot of space with people beside her.
It’s sad how PLL basically made Aria’s character revolve around her gross relationship with Ezra. Isn’t she supposed to be this creative, artsy, kinda eccentric girl? But rewatching the show, I don’t really get that impression.
One thing I’ve noted and find interesting is that outside of that relationship, her main storyline involves her familial strife—and in a different way than the other girls. The Hastings have shady dealings and illicit affairs, Hanna pretty much just has issues with her dad, and Emily’s mom had a brief stint as a homophobe.
Typically, the strife was caused by something the parent was doing. Not that Aria never had this or was never mad at her parents, but with her, it feels more like she wants to fix the problems in her family and be close like they once were, rather than only spending time being mad at them. She very much feels like a fixer. Unless the other Liars have done something they regret that hurt their parents, I don’t get that same vibe from them. TL;DR, family feels important to Aria’s character in a way that’s different than the rest of the girls. And a lot of her family drama stemmed from what we learned early on in the show, Byron’s affair, so it’s not always a new thing like it is with the other girls. Also I think her being the only Liar who’s an older sibling adds to that, with how protective she is of Mike (and is closer to him than Spencer is with Melissa or Ali was/is with Jason).
But yeah the point is Aria is and should’ve been more than what the show made her. She is not just the girl preyed on (oh, I’m sorry—ROMANCED) by her teacher. Why I’m talking intensively about the least interesting character from goddamn PLL of all things, I don’t know. But I am and here it is :)
Also I loved her outfits in the earlier seasons.
Agymnosexual
A microlabel on the asexual spectrum for those who still find the concept of sex non repulsive, whether that is a passive interest, an attraction, or a tolerance for the topic; but is repulsed by nudity in some or all forms.
I know that sounds confusing. Like, "But Paaatrick!! How do you feel sexual attraction and not mind it if nudity in most forms is so repulsive to you??" I don't know how to explain it but I do. It's why I don't identify as sex repulsed. I can still feel THAT aspect; but nudity is just this big, kind of triggering thing that I don't want to deal with if I can avoid it yknow? So I am repulsed by NUDITY not SEX. That's why I made this label.
And who knows. 🤷♂️ Maybe other people identify with this, too.
But primarily this is so people know what I'm talking about kinda. So I have a word for my experience.
So, definitely this is more self indulgent more than anything... just for my personal comfort I guess.
A - root for not/without ; Greek
Gymno / Gymnos - root for nude/nudity ; Greek
Flag coloring symbolism ;
The more to less saturated pieces of the flag in a 'reflection' like way, is MEANT to show the spectrum of nudity repulsion. As some are repulsed by ALL nudity, while others are not, etc.
(In my case, I'm repulsed by all forms of nudity EXCEPT artistic in most cases/scenarios.)
The hearts are, in a way meant to symbolize the presence of attraction regardless of repulsion
(no matter how that attraction manifests. And once more, the more/less saturation may symbolize the variety of the identifiers "intensity" of these attractive feelings.)
And the crosses or "x's" are meant to symbolize repulsion. Again, on a more to less saturated spectrum like the rest of the flag.
i remember really hating the ending of dead poets society the first time i watched it. i was sitting on the stairs of my house, looking angrily at the tv. i told my mom “this can’t be how this ends, there has to be more. i need to hear the rest of the story.” i felt the same way as if i had read a book series and thought the ending let all the strings loose. but now as a rewatch it for the millionth time, i enjoy the ending. i’m a lot more emotional now when i watch it, i cry harder than i do at the neil death scene (i honestly laugh cause of the slomo). i understand now that the ending is so open, it makes you wonder what happened next. but you know what happened… the cycle starts again. the travesty goes unnoticed and unpunished and the next group of welton boys go into the school and leave one day. the ending shot of todd’s head makes me so emotional because i genuinely feel so horrible for him, his life was changed by the people around him and the system brought them all down. his english class turned into a jail cell and his best friend died. the ending is now one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
Headcanons about Bergy and Nix (Mostly Nix because he has the least amount of canon details):
In terms of the friend group that is the techs, Nix is pretty close to the edge of the group. Everyone knows him, but no one knows much about him (only two of the techs know that Nix is actually the last name of Adam Michael Nix (canonically his full name)) and he kind of has that “Friend of a Friend” type of vibe. There’s a degree of separation between him and the rest. His two proper connections into the rest of the group are through Mitch and Bergy.
Anyways I put way too much thought into why he’s canonically frequently paired up with Bergy so here’s more headcanons mixed with way too much analyzing.
I headcanon that Bergy was the newest glitch tech in Bailley before Five and Miko came along, while Nix is one of the older techs, having joined around the same time as Mitch, but is still way lower level than him partly due to him having a second job at Joystick Jr’s (which also contributes to that “degree of separation” between him and the other techs and also explains why he rarely shows up in the show. He’s working multiple jobs and literally can’t be around the others as much).
But also, it’s canon from the Glitch Techs Tech Manual (a kind of official-but-unreleased show bible that shows details about the show) that Bergy is kind of an odd one out in terms of his skills and why he was recruited in the first place.
Mitch is a gaming prodigy who’s been winning tournaments since he was a kid and still seems to be participating in them even though he’s stopped streaming and Hannesh is canonically a gaming prodigy who would regularly participate in tournaments until getting extremely burnt out and leaving that whole thing behind, with Hinobi seeking him out not long after. Five and Miko were recruited due to a mix of them winning the Hinobi Smash tournament, having the skills to defeat an arcade full of glitches with no prior training and Miko’s immunity to resets. Nix was apparently sought out for “completion of achievements” and just going by the standards of everyone else, those achievements were probably pretty impressive or extremely hard to get. What Zahra did to get brought in by Hinobi isn’t stated but again, just going by the reasons that Hinobi hired everyone else there’s no way she didn’t have some extremely high level of skill before being hired.
Bergy was canonically hired due to “overly-positive conduct in community forums”. So everyone else was brought in because they were some of the best gamers in town and were extremely good at what they do, while Bergy got in because he was just really friendly and a good person. Not exactly what Hinobi seems to normally search for in a tech.
So just because of that, I kind of wonder if Bergy was even originally going to BE a tech. Maybe he was brought in for something else, probably something more social and lining up with why he was hired in the first place, but somehow Bergy got himself into the glitch techs anyways. Maybe he found that he enjoyed being a tech more than his original purpose and Phil was more than happy to have another tech on patrol. Who knows.
Anyways, put yourself in Phil’s shoes here. You have a young, inexperienced, tech who doesn’t seem to have the traditional gaming skills or qualifications or to be perfectly honest, physical ability that techs usually have and/or are actively sought out for having, who might not have even been originally intended to be a tech. What do you do with him?
You pair him up with someone more experienced both so the inexperienced tech can learn the ropes out in the field and so the more experienced tech can act like a bodyguard if they end up going against something above their weight class.
So that just leaves who you stick Bergy with.
BITT should be the first choice because his name is literally an acronym for Binary Intelligence TECH TRAINER, but his job of running the entire store and serving as “guy-in-the-chair” support to techs is way too valuable, so sadly BITT cannot do what he was created to do.
Zahra and Haneesh aren’t the best options because (at least according to my own headcanons) they’ve joined about a year ago at this point in pre-canon time and aren’t as experienced as they are in the show yet, so there’s better options to consider first.
Mitch is immediately off the table for a variety of reasons including the fact that
There’s no way in hell that Mitch would take kindly to having to regularly work with another tech, let alone a tech that’s way lower level than him that he would have to train and teach things to.
It’s been shown in canon that Bergy just kind of.. takes orders from whoever’s in charge without questioning them, so combine that with the last point and Mitch would probably just tell Bergy to wait in the van or at HQ, or really anything that gets him out of the way. Point is Bergy isn’t going to get any experience of any kind from this arrangement.
Mitch’s idea of a Slow Day is one that only has him fight ONE extremely dangerous boss glitch, and when he’s not stealing glitches from other techs (which keeping another tech near him at all times might slow or actually stop), he’s hunting down and fighting the largest thing he can find on his radar. You don’t want a level one tech even remotely near any of that.
So just going by process of elimination here, that leaves Nix and Simi (who hasn’t transferred to Dabney yet).
Now Nix has a lot going for him in this scenario that works out.
He’s not Mitch.
He’s a older glitch tech with about as much knowledge as Mitch, at the cost of less actual experience and a lower level on account of that second job.
That lower level actually becomes an advantage because unlike Mitch, Nix’s lower level means that he’s more equipped to deal with and therefore fights lower level glitches. He CAN still go after something dangerous and drag Bergy with him, he’s only human, but the fact that his equipment is lower level is a pretty good deterrent and that’ll do for now.
Despite that lower level, Nix is still strong enough to bodyguard Bergy if stuff goes wrong.
Sure Nix isn’t around as much, but even compared to the other options like Simi or Zahra and Haneesh, Nix is just a better pick.
So that’s why the two originally got paired together, and they still frequently go on missions together even now that Bergy no longer needs someone training him simply because they’re friends at this point.
"Luka."
The one who suffers. The one who only knows how to inflict suffering. A broken doll that's been used until its broken again and again. A broken doll that lays still by her side now, hooked up to an unfathomable amount of monitors and drips which Hyuna cannot make sense of.
There's a strange part of her that wishes to rip all these cords out. To silence the steady beeping that indicates Luka's life. At least then Hyun Woo's death would be appeased. At least then their failed plans would all be...
But that's a lie she tells herself, caught between the thin veil of love and hatred, and she's always been pulled towards love.
Tears spring unbidden to her eyes. She limps closer and settles herself by his side, weight dipping the bed. Dark strands spill over her shoulders and tickle his fingers, lying open and still by her.
She looks at them for a second, then back at Luka. Her heart twists, and something angry and sweet and forlorn blossoms in her chest. The others don't like him, don't trust him, and tell her that she should feel the same.
But then she reaches out without thinking, and intertwines limp fingers with her own.
"Luka," she whispers again, and it sounds like a prayer.
