#365daysofbiking In denial:
Saturday, October 17th 2020 - A great ride really that didn’t turn out as planned. I was heading for the Churnet Valley again, and rather than take the boring road up over Willslock and through Uttoxeter to Denstone, I decided to wind may way through villages to the west of there.
I was beset by mechanical problems in the first 20 miles. And it rained that horrid, fine rain that slowly but surely dissolves your determination, by getting into your clothes and just by being no fun at all. But against my better judgment, I pressed on.
And as I neared Alton, the sun started shining weakly, and the rain abated. I found beautiful views and a lovely ford near Hollington, and in the dying hours of daylight the Churnet Valley was as gorgeous as I’d hoped.
I had planned to do a loop up Ousal Dale and Dimmings Dale but it was such tough going up Ousal Dale that I decided to leave the valley via Oldfurnace and Greendale, which were gorgeous in their sunset, with the smoke-wreathed cottaged particularly enchanting.
I headed home to complete the 70 miler though a gorgeous sunset at Crakemarshand up Buttermilk Hill in the dark, Marchington Woodlands and Hoar Cross, accompanied by a soundtrack of owls.
The windmill at Longdon and Black Swan at Smeltingmill were lovely treats, too.
A ride that started badly but finished rather well.

#365daysofbiking A king’s ramson:
May 10th - The weather was still excellent the following day so I decided to ride out to another of my great restoratives - the Needwood Valley and Hoar Cross.
On the way, I came through Hanch, the tiny hamlet between Longdon Green and Handsacre.
This small cluster of large houses is old, and there’s a brook flowing noisily alongside the three-lined lane. In the margin between the two, a veritable forest of wild garlic, or ramsons.
The smell of garlic was strong and heady, and very appetising. This common wetland plant can be used as a substitute for normal garlic and is tasty in stir fries and can make for lovely jams and sauces.
I picked a little for later...
A treat for the senses.

#365daysofbiking The thrill of The Chase:
July 14th - Working in the morning, I slipped out late afternoon for a fast ride over Cannock Chase and back through Rugeley via the canal and Longdon.
The sun, canal and golden hour were just the tonic after a hectic day, but my energy was low.
I don’t often visit the Chase in summer, as it’s usually crowded and bikes and dogs don’t really mix, but this evening - probably due to sporting excitement on TV - it was very quiet and away from the centres at Marquis Drive and Birches Valley I saw hardly anyone.
I note Rugeley Power Station is looking forlorn now: The desulphurisation plant has been removed and demolition continues with most of the ancillary plant no gone. It won’t be long now before the huge icon and photographic muse will be nothing but a memory.
It was a long, slower haul home but a lovely ride.

#365daysofbiking Tonic:
November 11th - After the traditional act of Remembrancem I spoon out late afternoon. its been a sad few weeks and I needed a decent restorative and where better than Abraham’s Valley on Cannock Chase at dusk?
The colours of the heath and forest were gorgeous, and the riding fast and easy. My mood was lifted dramatically.
Returning via Rugeley and the backlands of London after nightfall was also unexpectedly pleasurable.
Despite everything, there’s still very little that’s better than a good ride out when you’re down.
July 8th - A pleasant 38 miler in the evening sun, relaxed and gentle around Chasewater, Lichfield, Whitemore Haye, Fradley, Alrewas and Yoxall rewarded me with a gorgeous golden hour.
In the soft light, the ripening wheat at Farewell glowed in the evening, and I realised that within 10 days or so this crop would be harvested.
It seems early this year - but we have had a lot of sun. I wonder if this weather continues, shall we face an early autumn? I sincerely hope not!
