Chapter 7: Preparation
Agad came in over breakfast.
“Agad, welcome to my home,” Seth said, taking a long drink of milk. He wiped his mouth with his sleeve, “Have a seat. What have you got on Kendra?”
Agad looked more tired than Seth had ever seen him, and let Seth’s joke go flat. He sat down and the six-armed woman that worked in the kitchen put a plate of oatmeal out for him. “Thank you, Simrin,” Agad said. “I have some news, not much of it good. I was able to track the goblins that stole the barrel, they were hiding in Goblin town.”
“Sounds like a fun place,” Seth said.
“You would probably enjoy it,” Agad said, bowing his head, “Just make sure not to lose your eye, or your tooth. It’s in Nevada, not a proper preserve, no caretaker. But they keep to themselves and have general distractor spells, so everyone leaves it alone. I found Slaggo there.”
“Long trip for a goblin on the run.”
“The Sphinx probably helped him, and a wizard named Vernaz. I thought she was an ally and gave Mendigo’s materials to her to be reconstructed. She was good at laying enchantments, much better than me. Her other talent is teleportation, and could have easily helped Slaggo leave Fablehaven with the barrel. I’m positive the barrel made it to the Sphinx.”
Seth finished his last bite of oatmeal, “Then we’re sure that the Sphinx and Ronodin are working together. That sucks, one of them is bad enough.”
Agad massaged his forehead, “I fear it was a mistake to make the Sphinx an Eternal. It will certainly keep the new demon prison closed from him, but I underestimated how cunning he is, even with his Shadow Charmer powers diminished.”
“What did you do to him?” Seth asked.
Agad shrugged, “Not enough apparently. He can’t hear the undead anymore, but we couldn’t dampen much else without killing him. He can put out fires, undo locks, shadow walk. That’s apparently enough to strike against us.”
“The Sphinx had this huge rant about refusing to be a captive,” Seth said, “We should have paid more attention to it. There was no way he was ever going to live by someone else’s say so. Remember, you gave all of us the call, we’re all to blame.”
“Yes, the long life seemed the greatest weakness to the mortal locks,” Agad replied, “It made sense at the time to have at least one person who would not feel that burden, but you are right. He firmly believed in his own rhetoric, and not acknowledging that was a mistake. Both the Sphinx and Vernaz have slipped away. Vanessa is going to be insufferable, and I am going to deserve every minute.”

He doesn't know what happens. One minute he's struggling against the leash spell, the next he's tripping on his own momentum as the magic suddenly snaps, as he tastes freedom for the first time in- in ever, probably.
Adrien doesn't stop long enough to think about where he's going or why. He just bolts.
(Marinette's spell goes wildly off-target, but it's a stroke of luck for everyone involved that it does).

Knowing Larissa Weems
Chapter 6: Morticia Addams
It’s a few days before break starts, exams and excitement all throughout the school. You’ve been grading non stop for days now, up far into the night to keep up and you’re surviving off coffee. You’ve had it cleared for you to stay at the school over the break, you haven’t talked to Alan in a while and your grandma is too far away to make the drive alone. Today was going to be a long one, you started the day with a meeting where Larissa said some parents would be coming to visit, as much anxiety as that gave you, it also excited you. You decided to hang back after the meeting and talk to Larissa for a few minutes, you had some questions.
“Larissa, can I talk to you for a moment?” You smiled to show it was nothing too serious.
“Of course, I always have time for you!” She said cheerfully.
“I have a list of stuff I want to cover next semester, there’s some books here that I’ll need you to sign off on, if that’s alright?” You asked.
She nodded, “Sure, bring me the list by the end of the week. I’m pretty booked today. Morticia Addams is coming” she sighed.
The name made your ears ring, Morticia had a long standing reputation around the school for several reasons but the one that mattered to you was that she was Larissa’s ex. You knew that this meeting probably wasn’t sitting well with Larissa either.
“Are you going to be okay? I mean, you will be it’s been a long time, but” you tilted your head to the side as you looked at her.
“I’ll be fine,” she tried to seem confident but it wasn’t working, “It’s all water under the bridge. I’ll be bringing her to lunch this afternoon in the dining hall. Miss Addams will not be thrilled at the presence of her mother.” She said dryly, rolling her eyes.
You nodded, “alright, if you’re sure. I better get going, I have a room full of anxious teenagers waiting for me”
“Have a good day, Professor Slate” she said as she walked you into the hall.
You noticed the sound of foot steps coming up behind you, matching your pace.
“Good morning, Kale” you heard in a not unfamiliar voice
“Good morning Professor Mara” you smiled.
“Really? Professionalism outside of the classroom?” She chuckled
“There are in fact learning ears around us, Rina, but you’re right. It feels weird to address you that way, you’re far less professional” you joked and waving at her as you entered your room.
“Good morning, bright minds! Are we ready to get testing?” Lots of sighs and tapping pencils was all that answered you.
You grabbed the stack of papers off your desk and walked up and down the aisles handing them out, a few students looked at you wide eyed when they looked over the test, you nodded and smiled at them. Reassuring that they were smart and knew what they were doing. If anyone believed in these kids, it was you. You set the timer and stated that they could begin. You sat down to do some grading on your laptop, the vibrating of your phone grabbed your attention. You typically didn’t pull your phone out during a lesson, but you also knew Larissa was going to be having a hard time with *her* in the building.
Rina: How’s it going in there?
Kale: Rina, aren’t you also running a test? Why are you texting me.
Rina: They’re engrossed, did you see the Addams pull up?
Kale: Rina, what? No, no I didn’t. I’ll see you after lesson.
You put your phone back in your satchel and tried your best to focus on the grading in front of you. Your mind drifted back to when Larissa first told you about Morticia. You had gone out for the night, just to clear your heads after one of Wednesdays especially weird shenanigans, the conversation played right through your mind.
“That child, she’s up to no good but I can’t prove it” Larissa said.
“She does seem, off putting” you nodded.
“She’s too much like her mother, no doubt she’ll be just as manipulative.” She said rolling her eyes.
“You never told me, what happened there? I know you were roommates.” You said
Larissa took a deep breath, tossing her glass back “She’s my ex. We were together for about 2 years. How much of that she was faithful I’m unsure.”
Your eyes grew wide at the admission, “Larissa, you like people who aren’t men?”
“That’s what you took from that?” She stifled a laugh
“Sorry, I’m sorry.” You felt your face heat up in embarrassment.
For the next 3 hours she told you all about Morticia Addams. She detailed the heartbreak, how she spent several nights crying when she discovered of Gomez taking *her* Tish. You felt a sense of protectiveness over her in the moment. Who would throw away Larissa Weems for a man of all things. The same Larissa who had the contagious laugh, the elegance of a queen, the very same Larissa that would lay down her life to protect those she loved.
“Shit” you said under your breath as the sound of the alarm scared you out of your daydream. You quickly looked around and notified the students coming up to hand in their tests. Nobody seemed to notice you zoned out for a little bit, thank goodness.
—————————————————————————
The lunch bell rang and you had a knock at your door and poking her head in, was Rina.
“Hey, you wanna sit with me at lunch? I’m still too new and don’t really know anyone else.” She admitted a little awkwardly.
You laughed, “so the vampire would rather hang out with the shifter, huh?” You raised your eyebrows.
“Oh shut up, the other vampires here seem to have their cliques already. I’m afraid you’re stuck with the philosophy professor.” She shrugged her shoulders
“Okay, okay. You don’t have to twist my arm. I will warn you though, I sit with Larissa.”
“Principal Weems? You CHOOSE to sit with the principal?” She looked stunned.
“I don’t choose to, we are rather close. She taught me how to use my powers back when I started. She’s really sweet, I promise.” You walked into the hall and fished for your keys.
“I’ll take your word for it, she scares me. Maybe it’s the height, I come up rather short in that department” she threw her head back with a laugh.
“You are the shortest vampire I know, everyone else here dwarfs you, except maybe the year 7’s.” You poked
The conversation continued as you walked down into the dining area and joined the line. Catarina had started shortly after Paige was let go, Larissa was nervous but hopeful about this hire. She sometimes stuck to you like glue, you showed her around and introduced her to the others. She was much different than any vampire you’d ever met. Short, deep brown eyes and very blond hair, but she seemed pretty alright. You were becoming fast friends, you were really her only friend but she didn’t like to admit that. You grabbed your food, turning and immediately seeing Larissa who waved you over.
“Is that her?” Rina said leaning in.
“I think so, I see the grim expression runs in the family” you said quietly.
You smiled at Larissa as you walked over, taking your normal seat across from her and next to Morticia. You had an uneasy feeling as soon as you sat down.
“You must be Professor Slate” you heard from beside you, quickly swallowing your drink
“Yes, I am.” You smiled; “you must be Mrs. Addams.” You extended your hand
“Please, call me Morticia” she said as she shook your hand loosely.
“Nice to meet you, Morticia” her name tasted like ash and rubber on your tongue. You kept yourself polite.
Topics flowed between you all, Rina even chimed in a few times making Larissa laugh. The topic eventually ended up stopping on Wednesday.
“She’s doing exceptional in my class” Rina said, “she’s always got interesting takes on whatever the topic is, even if they’re somewhat dark.”
“She’s been quite somber since her father passed. She has always been fascinated with death, I suppose when it’s someone you care about, it’s less fun.” She said quietly.
You shot Larissa a look at the admission of that information, she met your eyes and you could see that she had something to tell you. Lunch passed and classes continued. You were crossing the quad when you heard someone call after you, you stopped and turned. Morticia was walking up to you, a smile on her face.
“Professor Slate” she smiled
“Please, call me Kale when there aren’t students around.” You insisted.
“Kale, that’s a lovely name. It matches the lovely person who wears it” she said.
“Thank you, I picked it myself” you laughed.
What you couldn’t see was Larissa watching you from her window. You were heading out to the track to do your daily training, she always watched to make sure you made it out there. She gripped the window seal as she saw Morticia put her hand on your shoulder and kiss your cheek. You were smiling and talking animatedly, she felt a fire start behind her ribs. She couldn’t look away no matter how much she wanted to, she had to keep it professional, she’d just offered Morticia a job as the botany professor mere hours ago. She saw you wave as you continued your walk to the gym, she knew Morticia would be knocking on her door in a matter of no time.
Once you’d made it, she returned to her desk and opened her laptop, pulling up emails and doing her best to focus on responding to as many as she could. Now was not the time to get carried away but she couldn’t help but wonder why you’d smiled at Morticia that way or why you’d let her that close. You weren’t someone for physical affection outside of the arm linking you two did when you walked through the markets.
“Hello Issa” the voice pulled her attention to the door.
“Hello, Morticia” she said far calmer than she felt.
“I brought my lesson plans, I’m sorry I’m a little late. I was speaking to Kale out in the quad.”
Larissa felt her hands grow tense, the sound of your name coming out of her mouth was enough to make her sick.
“That’s wonderful, Kale is an amazing person.” She smiled
“They’re adorable, so young and full of life.” Morticia said as she laid the papers down on Larissa’s desk.
Fighting the anger that was rising in her throat, she swallowed thickly and nodded, “They are quite special to us here”.
“I would like to get to know them, they seem very genuine. Maybe I can spend some time with them” she smiled with a devious grin on her face.
Larissa shot out of her chair and across her desk, her voice low and threatening, “Don’t you dare. You will stay away from Kale, don’t make me repeat myself. Do you understand me, Morticia? You will not touch a hair on their head or so much as look in their direction. Kale is untouchable and off the table.”
Morticia was visibly taken back by the visceral reaction that Larissa had to that, she tried to recover quickly, “Issa if there is something there, you know I would never cross that boundary.”
“I wouldn’t know, Morticia. You did cheat on me with Gomez, boundary crossing is kind of your forte” she sneered. “Besides, there is nothing there. We are friends and I care deeply for them, I won’t let you hurt them.”
—————————————————————————
You were on your last lap around the track when you felt your phone go off, you decided to leave it until your cool down and pushed yourself the last 500 yards. You got yourself slowed down, grabbed your towel and started your cool down walk. Checking your phone you had several messages:
Larissa: After your work out can you come to my quarters so we can talk, darling
Rina: DUDE! You have got to text me as soon as you can, I heard Larissa and Morticia talking.
Grandma: I love you, Kale Riley
Smiling to yourself you decided respond to your grandma first, telling her that you loved her and couldn’t wait for your weekly phone call tomorrow, next you scrolled to Rina,
Kale: What happened?
Rina: O M G.
Kale: Well are you going to tell me or act like the Sinclair girl?
Rina: Wow that’s rude, anyway. I was walking past Weems office and caught the end of what sounded like a threatening conversation. I heard your name mentioned!
Kale: Rina I think you need your hearing checked but also why are you eavesdropping on our headmistress?
Rina: I wasn’t! I was just passing by! Morticia looked shaken up when she came out!
You closed the chat and opened Larissa’s,
Kale Riley: Yes ma’am, I’ll be there shortly.
You locked your phone and hopped in the shower, washing your hair was much easier now that it was shorter, you’d snuck off before your work out and gotten it cut. You were fairly sure it was going to shock people, you’d loved your mid length hair but you needed a change. You finished up and threw on Larissa’s hoodie and some shorts. Making the walk back across the quad was chilly, you cursed yourself for only packing shorts. Once inside you stopped by your quarters and tossed your bag inside, you’d deal with the laundry later. You felt your phone go off again:
Rina: are you going to talk to Weems?
Kale: Yes, I’m headed there. Why?
Rina: Tell her hi for me :)
You shook your head and knocked on her door,
“Come in!” Her sweet voice floated to the hallway
“Hey, you wanted to see me?” You said
“Is that my hoodie again?” She cocked her head to the side
You playfully rolled your eyes, “If it is, it’s certainly none of your business. It clearly lives in my wardrobe.”
She laughed at that and said, “Do you have your list of books for next term?”
“I don’t have it quite finished yet, I was a little preoccupied today, some students needed me to go over some stuff with them.”
“Always the attentive professor, I commend you. I know you haven’t been sleeping.” She said.
“You know me, I don’t sleep. I actually stay awake all hours and haunt the school like a Victorian ghost” you gestured wildly
She snorted at that, “Well my Victorian ghost professor please have your list to me by the end of tomorrow.”
“Yes ma’am” you saluted her with 2 fingers “you got it, you call the shots and I call the bull.” You laughed fully then.
“Good night, Professor Slate, nice hair cut by the way.” she smiled softly and walked you out.
Your alarm was blaring extra loud the next morning, you threw your phone across the room, hoping you didn’t crack the screen. You got yourself up, you’d spent most of the night on your list for Larissa. Today was the last day before break, you thanked the gods. You needed a break desperately. You decided to wear a simple sweater vest along with some khakis and your boots, you like the 2 inch lift they gave you. You grabbed your coffee and headed to Larissa’s office, you didn’t bother knocking, shame on you.
“Hey Lari-“ the words died in your throat when you saw what was happening as you opened the door.
There before you stood Morticia and Larissa going back and forth, you saw Larissa wrap her hand around Morticias throat, a gasp escaped low and almost inaudible. You quickly turned and ran down the steps, the vision sticking to the inside of your eye lids like a horror scene.
Larissa looked up when she heard you, eyes growing wide with concern and quickly let go of Morticia “Kale, Kale!” She called after you but you did not turn around or stop.
You pulled your phone out and texted Rina
Kale: Emergency, meet me in my classroom ASAP
Rina: I’ll be right there
You threw your bag down, pacing in a circle, Rina came bursting through your door.
“Hey, it’s like 7:15 what’s going on?” She sounded out of breath
“I just walked in on Larissa and Morticia” you stared at the floor
“YOU WHAT?” She yelled
“Can you lower your voice? This is bad.” You said angrily
“Kale, I doubt that’s what was happening. Larissa doesn’t seem like that kind of person, you need to talk to her.” She tried to calm you down.
You nodded and pulled your phone out, searching for your thread with Larissa
Kale Riley: What the fuck was that?
Larissa: Kale it’s not what it looked like.
Kale Riley: Well then what was it exactly, Larissa?
Larissa: I wanted her to stay away from you, we were fighting.
Kale Riley: Me? Why does she need to stay away from me?
She left you on read then, you looked at Rina and shook your head.
