✍️ Writing Is Time Travel (and Sometimes You Trip)
I've been thinking about how weird it is to write a longfic when you're way ahead of what's actually posted.
The chapter I'm writing now is emotionally miles away—tonally, thematically, spiritually—from what's public. And sometimes, I have to go back. Fill in a missing chapter. Revisit a version of a character I haven't touched in months. Re-enter an emotional timeline I've already crawled out of.
And it's hard! Because the character I'm writing now is not the one from Chapter 26. But she is. She's still her. Just one emotional beat earlier. It's like holding a memory that hasn't happened yet and trying not to spoil it for yourself.
You've written the spiral, the softness, the breakdown, the tentative healing—and now you're supposed to rewind and write the girl who hasn't spiraled yet. Who still thinks everything's fine. Who doesn't realize the narrative is about to steamroll her.
And the wild part? It's not just your character that's changed. It's you. You're not the same writer who wrote Chapter 18. Or Chapter 5. Or the outline that felt so obvious and genius at 2am.
Writing longfic means living in multiple emotional timelines at once. It means asking: how do I get her from here to there, when I already know where she's going—but she absolutely does not?
And then there's the other thing—the thing no one warns you about: you know everything. You, the writer, are omniscient. You're sitting there with your little roadmap, watching your readers slowly pick up crumbs like "hmm I wonder if this will be important..." Meanwhile, you're in the background whispering you have no idea, sweetie, no idea.
And sometimes that's lonely! Because your anxiety isn't about the chapter you're posting now—it's about Chapter XX. The one that hasn't even happened yet. You're worried it's too obvious. Or too subtle. Or both at once. You're spiraling about a scene that's still sitting in your drafts folder.
You're pacing over a metaphor the readers haven't even met. You're grieving a moment they haven't even reached.
That's the thing about writing a longfic: you're living ten chapters ahead and trying not to let it show.
So yeah. Writing is time travel. And sometimes you trip. But hey—sometimes, you stick the landing.
